thats not really scary...........they have always been at war. sort of their culture, what is scary is when we try to force our ideas on people who do not want to change......

Quick answer to why---Pearl Harbor! Although I have compassion for the individuals hurt/killed, Their country started it. There's an old story from my youth---the punch line is 'Don't fu ck with Hoppy!!!

Pearl Harbor was a valid military target even in peace time.
If you put the shoe on the other foot, Say Japan sailed it's entire battle group to an island just about midway between us and them, then lined up all their ships in little rows in an almost taunting manner....dont you think the US would have done the same? Hell yea!
Dont get me wrong, i too regret the loss of life at pearl.
but we did build a naval base smack in the middle of a resort area then fill it up with ships all lined up in neat little rows.
even a small child playing electronic battleship doesnt make that mistake.
kinda makes you wonder why we seperated the air group from the surface group and then sacrificed all those old obsolete warships..dont it?
Anyways...fast forward to today.
Our retaliation for japan attacking a valid military target was to nuke two major metropolitan areas.
Shouldn't our response to 9-11 be "similar"?

Actually, our reason to drop atomic bombs was to gain surrender and avoid an invasion that would have doubtless cost a million lives.
Dropping the bombs ended the war.

Those "old and obsolete" warships were the backbone of the US Navy's Pacific Fleet at the time--aircraft carriers didn't supplant battleships as the top vessels until we were into WWII. This was common naval thinking at the time, even by Yamamoto, whose forces concentrated on the battleships, missing the more important strategic targets--the fuel/supply depots, intelligence facilities, and the submarine support facilities.
The battleships were lined up in "neat little rows" because that's how the moorings were laid out--hindsight being what it is, very few in the Navy brass thought that an attack at Pear Harbor was feasible, primarily because of its shallow entrance.
They didn't. The US Navy's history in Hawaii goes back to the early 19th century; in 1887 they were granted an exclusive lease to establish the "coaling and repair station" that would officially become the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in 1911--and all of this happened long before it became a "resort area." There is absolutely no analogy to be drawn between this and Saddam Hussein's use of "human shields."
