That's the sound I'm hearing from the belt/idler pulley when shifting into 2nd...

Anyone know what the culprit is? I had a new belt replaced about half a year ago. I have heard it being the idler pulley/belt tensione.

I don't even feel like driving the car fast, that's how bad it is. I get embarrassed when I shift and then have a S C R E E C H ! Sounds like a broken down supercharger LOL.

Should I try to oil up the belt a lil' first, or just get the idler pulley changed ? or what else ?

I get the same sound when i get on it pretty hard.. sounds like the belt slipping

I have replaced both the tensioner and idler pullies. I don't think that is it. Pull the belt off and take a look at both of the pullies. If the black paint is worn off on just one side and is shiny on the other, it is probably an alignment issue with the tensioner. That said, I would also spray the crap out of the belt with 'belt dressing' and see how long that takes care of the issue.

I will for sure do that, one of my pulleys is indeed wearing in color. The powdercoat is off where the belt hits so I will get some belt dressing this weekend. Hope that cures it.

Belt dressing is not meant for serpentine belts!

No dressing, please

Contamination may be either unintentional or intentional. By the latter we mean the application of belt dressing, an old-fashioned quick-fix for noise and slippage. It is a symptomatic treatment that does not get to the underlying cause of the problem, which is almost always improper tensioning (squeal) or misalignment (chirp).

Silicone- or wax-based dressings lubricate the belt/pulley interface, and when you think of how a serpentine belt does its job you will see that this will result in slippage and overheating, perhaps to the point of premature failure. Sticky dressings of the gum, tar, or rosin variety are supposed to enhance grip. But that does not hold up under scrutiny since at operating temperature most of these become fluid and actually act as lubricants. They tend to bold dust and dirt, too, which will not only cause wear, but can also build up in the alignment grooves and walk the belt off the pulley.

This boils down to a simple rule: Do not use belt dressings.

Pick up a Dayco PolyCog or a Goodyear Gatorback serpentine belt after you're sure you have no pully/tensioner issues. They cost a bit more than the standard serpentine replacement belt but are worth it IMHO.

I agree with you JP. I went thru a couple of belts, then I replaced the pullies with Dayco's.

The Gatorback would be my choice.

As far as dressings go. Once the belt is bad, it is bad. So the dressing will do no more additional harm and will provide the temporary piece of mind so you don't mind pulling into the McDonalds drive up window with your motor screeching like a Honda 4 banger.

I do concur that I would not put the dressing on a new belt. Like I said, the belt is already bad so what is the harm?

So I say do the dressing and buy yourself a coupe of days of peace until you can replace the belt.

My Gen 2 motor spins so much harder than a Gen 1 that I'm always roasting belts. Guess it comes with the territory.

I had the same issue...there was some pitting on my water-pump pulley.

take the belt off, and replace it(its cheap insurance). remove the 4 bolts that hold the waterpump pulley to the water pump(easier to loosen them with belt still on...it holds the pulley for you), then use scotch-brite or emery clotch to clean the surface of the waterpump pulley.

worked for me. Its common this time of year...moisture causes bare metal to corrode...

NO BELT DRESSING ON SERPENTINE BELTS!!!

Just warming up.

I hear ya Craig but after 2 pullies and 2 belts, the spray went on and the noise went away. At least temporarily, until I start shifting at 7k and melt the rubber coating, exposing the belt wires. Then the thing really sings.

I surrender. The more permanent thing to do is definitely the gatorback, but I'd still dress the thing on my way to the store.

Hey, either of you guys carry a spare belt in the trunk? I do. Peace of mind. Sometimes a guy can lose a belt at 150+ mph and then the air conditioning and power steering stop working, in addition to the coolant turning into steam, and the worse yet to occur, the decibels dropping from 116 to 60 as the wattage sinks from 500 to 5. That sucks.
