So, today I finally conceded for the first time in probably a year or so (yeah, I don't get sick often) that I've definitely got a cold. Normally, my answer to that is DayQuil during the day, and NyQuil at night. I still have some NyQuil left over from my last episode, so that's taken care of. But, I'm out of DayQuil.

No big deal, I'll go to the store and get some more, right? Well, I must say I was fairly disturbed to find out just prior to going to pick some up, that it no longer contains pseudoephedrine due to a (relatively) recent Federal law passed in the "War on Drugs"! Apparently, pseudoephedrine is no longer allowed in OTC drugs because some meth heads thought it was the best thing for their labs since the Bunsen burner!

So, now all the cold drugs are using phenylephrine instead, which according to some studies is no more effective than a placebo! So, in our nation's zealous effort in fighting the "War on Drugs", it seems we've now lost significant ground in the war against the common cold!

Personally, the last time I had a cold that was bad enough for me to take OTC drugs daily, the only drugs that seemed to have any effect all contained pseudoephedrine. So, now what am I supposed to do, just suffer? Thanks a lot, America!

</end rant>

My wife got sick recently and went to CVS to pick up some cold medication... They made her show her license and they logged what she bought and everything.... thats so screwed up...

Yeah, I just got back from Walgreens now. Had to show my license for some Sudafed, and I didn't see many other drugs behind the counter that included pseudoephedrine. Most have apparently switched to phenylephrine in order to stay on the other side of the counter.

Here's a bit from the Wikipedia article about the law, called the CMEA (for "Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005"). It seems your wife's and my purchases will be kept on record for a couple years, and if we buy 12 or more additional packs of the stuff (Referring to Sudafed: 30 mg of pseudoephedrine per pill, 24 pills per pack) within a month, we can be arrested on a misdemeanor.

Merchant Restrictions

The Federal statute included the following requirements for merchants who sell these products:

  • A retrievable record of all purchases identifying the name and address of each party to be kept for two years.
  • Required verification of proof of identity of all purchasers
  • Required protection and disclosure methods in the collection of personal information
  • Reports to the Attorney General of any suspicious payments or disappearances of the regulated products
  • Required training of employees with regard to the requirements of the CMEA; Retailer must self-certify as to training and compliance
  • Non-liquid dose form of regulated product may only be sold in unit dose blister packs
  • Regulated products are to be sold behind the counter or in a locked cabinet in such a way as to restrict public access
  • Daily sales of regulated products not to exceed 3.6 grams without regard to the number of transactions
  • 30 day (not monthly) sales limit not to exceed 7.5 grams if sold by mail-order or "mobile retail vendor"
  • 30 day PURCHASE limit not to exceed 9 grams of pseudoephedrine base in regulated products (misdemeanor possession offense under 21 USC 844a for the individual who buys it)

For all of you guys who have colds!!!! Please try Cold-FX. Currently, it is the ONLY cold/flu medication EVER to pass FDA double blind testing. It's been in Canada for quite some time, and is available in the US. And it works exceptionally well. Generally knocks a bad 7-10 day cold into a 3-4 day sniffling cold. It's outstanding. No hard drug in it either. You have to try it to see how well it works...

Doesn't sound like it masks the symptoms though. It sounds a lot like Coldeeze.

My wife found an old box of some generic rip of Benadryl Cold & Sinus or something like that. Contained: Diphenhydramine, Pseudoephedrine, and Acetaminophen. I took three of those before bed the other night, and slept like a rock for 12 hours. After I woke up, I felt probably 80-90% better!

All of you are missing the boat. Zicam actually kills your cold before it even forms. All you have to do is spray it in your mouth when you feel a cold coming on, and the cold disappears. Zicam has NEVER failed to remove a cold I've had. Never. And I know the stuff works b/c it tastes like :q:q:q:q.

I've heard that using snortable versions are bad because they eleviate the symptoms for a short time but then after it's effects are gone the symptoms come back with a vengeance and only that stuff will make it go away again, basically you become addicted to it. That's just what one of my friends told me, no idea of any truth in it.
