Select Shift?

I've got an '02 LSE with Select Shift and I can't get my tranni into first gear using the SS. Does anyone know how to make this happen? I'm hoping that there is some way to override this 2nd gear start.
 
it defaults to second gear there is no way around it. If you want a first gear start leave it in D5 then shift to sst after you get into second or third that way you can stretch out 4th.

I think Quik LS has been fooling around with disabling it using the sct flasher but there defintely is no other way around it.
 
I also have 02 LSE.
at stop, it will only go to 2nd gear but if you press the gas, it will automatically go down to 1st. there's like a half second delay but for me it's alright. you can still burn some rubber with traction off.
 
once your throttle goes past 60% it will downshift automatically. Once it downshifts you can hold it there - so I usually blip the throttle and roll a foot.

Once you come to a complete stop it'll upshift into 2nd again.

We haven't been able to get the PCM re-flasher to find that value.
 
I've noticed that if you blip to get it into 1st, and stop after a roll it will go to 2nd again. But if you do a brake stand without rolling forward - will it stay in 1st?

Joyride - it does start in 1st when you start from D4/D5.
 
right - as soon as your rear wheels stop moving it will upshift into 2nd.


if you keep the rear wheels moving - it'll stay in first - so to lay long black marks on the road - blip it to get into 1st then hit the gas with some brake. let off once your wallet is light enough.
 
if you do a california roll to the stop and do not come to a complete stop you can keep 1st but the second the car has no fwd momentum back to 2nd.
 
Man ford is just determined for the cars based on this chassis to be crippled. I was considering getting a LS v8 and trading in my 98 towncar. But after researching them and espically comparing the speed vs a stang for price found it to not be worth it. I think the year of ls i looked at was something liek 7 0-60 vs 5.5 for a stang gt. I think with my tune new rear end gears electric waterpump over drives i'm close to if not better than that. As I can outrun a 5.9 rs dakota just bearly and stomp a cadi escalade pickup (ext). Hopefully they start to let it run as I really like the look and handling of the LS.

if you're considering a mustang - a two seater pony car - then the LS was never the car for you - it's not even in the same class. It's a $40k 4-door lux sedan, that targeted the 5-series BMW of the day, and beat it, winning car-of-the-year the same year.

We all would love more power - but comparing the two doesn't make sense.

Ah, that shouldn't take long :D.

Anybody looking for speed anyways should know that when left in D4/D5 it performs better than if you manually select the gears. No matter how I tried the Auto mode was faster down the 1/4 track than I could do it with SST mode. Just remember to slap it over into 3rd so that the car doesn't look for 4th just before you cross the line (3.58 gears here).

IMHO, SST is really only useful for keeping the engine in the power band on turns where you've let off the throtle going it, or when you're anticipating passing somebody. Oh, the engine braking is nice too.

Ya know... I've been thinking about that problem. Without having the flasher to work with, and not knowing what you can really change with it, I submit this:

Why not lie to the computer, and give it a baseline reading of say, 1 or just any number greater than 0? It might be more in the realm of a hardware physical fix, only operable in SST mode. As soon as I manage to pilfer a set of books for my LS, I'll digest most of it and see what can be made, maybe as a piggy back chipset to get the results we want. I'm guessing the car gets its signal from the spedo pickup, and that's how it know's it's moving, that or any of the wheel encoders. We might be barking up the wrong tree looking to change the code of the PCM, but rather look to change what the PCM sees standing still, only in SST mode so it doesn't screw up normal performance.

My thoughts on this stemmed from my previous car with ABS. While yes it's nice you can steer around stuff during extreme braking, but if a tree's across the entire road and you have no place to go, locking down all four tires is the only way not to hit it. Presently the only way to do that is to turn the key off, and then the ABS pump gives up. I was in process to make an "E-Stop" for my car that would disable the ABS, but not kill the entire car.

Okay... way off topic. Sorry guys...
 
Well considering I have a towncar now I wanted a bit sportier car that was quicker than what I have. I didn't really want to get a sports car. But when I looked at the speed difference between the lsv8 and the stang it was more than i thought it would be. I figured it would be close but 1.5 seconds 0-60 vs the GT is quite a difference. Which is why I still have my towncar. I think if I hold off a bit a good tuner should be able to unlock some of the LSs potential.

And the handling and balance of the LS is far superior to the Mustang. Once we get the power up - it will be the best of both worlds.

Except for us non-SST folks. I can start in 1st anytime I like. :zgreenbou

Lets be real here, is there any REAL advantage of the SST over the non-SST shifter in these cars? Seems like the ONLY difference is the SST clicks up and down through the gears instead of moving the shifter. Considering the 2nd-gear-start-in-SST-mode limitation, seems like the SST cars are more handicapped than the non-SST cars.
 
I like the sst becasue i can keep the gear I am in and control the power better through cornering. Aside from that I think it is useless.

My LS barely beats my '99 Dak R/T's ET in the 1/4 mile, but has a couple MPH on it. Top-end, the LS handily walks the truck, but 0-60 the R/T will eat the LS alive. This is kinda depressing for the LS considering both engines are rated ~250HP but the CC-R/T is ~500 lbs heavier than the LS. Mods on both of my vehicles are similar:

'00 LS: Stock except for CAI - 15.115 @ 93.39
'99 Dak CC-R/T: Stock except for CAI (shaker hood), 275-50-17 Nitto 450s, 180 t-stat, Mopar PCM - 15.169 @ 89.72

Runs were made under similar weather conditions (cool evening).
 
holding it in gear as well as downshifting when I want - is a major benefit to me.

I can hold a gear as well by manually shifting. My gear changes may be slower than an SST car (don't know, never driven one). Again, seems like the only difference is click vs slide.
 
Well I dont have to worry about moving the shifter to high and sticking it in reverse on accident. My shifter on has D5 and D4 so I cannot click to 2 or 3.
 
No problem on the standard shifter either. When upshifting between D4 and D5, the shift handle moves R-to-L, not forward towards REV or N. There's a notch above D4 that keeps you from accidently over-shooting D4 and going into REV or N. You have to move the lever to the left for D5, then forward again to find N or REV.
 
That didn't take long. Thanks for the input. I actually just figured out how to pop it into first with the SS by stomping it and then shifting down to first. Actually, if you time it right and let it hit about 3500 in 2nd and then shift down, you can get a pretty nice chirp and hook up in first. I'm not trying to run anybody in this car, but it's still fun to give 'er hell every now and then. The LS might not be the fastest, but you can fool some people with the rolling chirp. Things may change a little if this supercharger ever comes out.
