the button popped out of my shifter last night, so i'm going to need a new one - preferably grey, unless there is some way of repairing the shifter. anyone got one, or any ideas?

Did the button itself break? When you remove the shifter the button is designed to pop out, if you hold it all the way in when you reinstall it it will stay in place. If the button itself is not broken, remove the clip and pry up a bit on the knob, then reinsert the button an spring holding it all the way in. If not broken it will catch and stay in place.

there is what looks like a little loop clip of plastic at the end of the button that has cracked off i guess if i could locate a button i could keep using my current shifter.

I had the same thing happen to me. I had to go to a salvage yard and pull a shifter out of another mark. When I got it out, I discovered that the one in the salvage yard was nicer than mine, so I just replaced the shifter for $25.00. A 15-minute job. Here's a link:

thanks for the link - unfotunately, mark viii's are very rare in canada, and decent salvage yards rarer still - but i will call around.
