I have a 2000 Lincoln LS 3.9V8 and I believe it has slipped timing. I was sitting at a stoplight and went to take off like normal, about 1/4 throttle, and it died. I tried to turn it back over and it just cranked and cranked with nothing happening. So I let it sit for a few minutes, approx. 5-10 minutes, and I finally got it to turn over. But when I did, it sounded like soembody inside the engine beating it from the inside out with a ball peen hammer. It also was popping, and backfiring, almost sounded like it was in the intake. I had it towed to the shop that I work at and the main tech said that it had slipped timing. We took a vaccuum gauge and I think he out it where one of the spark plugs goes and it just bounced around like a crackhead at woodstock. So as it sits now, its in the driveway and I was wondering if anybody else on here can point me in the right direction to get it running again. I had one of the coils replaced about 8 months ago and it ran fine after that up until this happened. I really hate to see this car sit there and go to waste, would like to get it running again, cuz lets face it, who wants a lincoln ls just sitting in their driveway. :D

Either option A or option B.

A. Replace engine.

B. Remove valve covers and front cover. Remove all chains and tensioners. Remove head on side that chain slipped and broke. Check pistons on that side for damage. If damage found, go to option A above. If not, have bent valves replaced, put in new chains and tensioners.

If you aren't doing the work yourself, just go with option A. Cheaper that way. Labor is KILLER on removing the front cover.

So if you recommend replacing the engine, should I replace it with the 3.9, or can I put a different motor in it and still keep my Lincoln ls "brain"? And if I do go to replace it, what engines can I stick in there with the 55r5n tranny? I would like to do a 4.6, but the engine bay is so crowded as it is, I don't want to do any major modifications to it.:shifty:

You can only use another gen I 3.9 engine or you can install a different engine but everything wont work. And you would also need a different transmission.

May even be cheaper to just get another LS...these engines arent cheap.

Anybody y'all suggest buying from online or should I just visit my local junkyard or engine exchange place?
