Smell when heat comes on???

So lately when i turn the heat on im getting a weird smell. its kinda like the smell a candle gives off when u blow it out. what would cause this. the car is driving fine i havent looked under the hood yet. any guesses. 00ls8, 64k

The smell you describe is like a burning smell, isn't it? Since the air coming through the heater is accessed from under the hood near the windshield, the source of the smell may be under the hood. Have you done any work under the hood recently or applied tape to anything? Seems like something is getting hot enough to burn.

umm... no taping or any work. i recently just got my oil changed and switched to synthetic. other than that nothing new.

Dose it still blow heat?? It could possibly be your heater core mine went out in my truck, but it smelled like feet. Is there water on the passenger floor board also?

no water, and heat is working fine. its every now and then. and it might be when the wipers are on. it was coming out of all the vents. i didnt stick my nose on the floor board but it was for sure coming out of all the top vents.

Man, I had the exact same problem a couple of weeks ago and it was a leaking valve cover gasket. Dealer fixed it and the smell is gone. I only had the smell when the heat was on just like you.

I had this problem on my 00 also. Some smoke came out of the hood as well. Took it to the dealer on Friday and it was the valve covers. They did both sides for $545.

sorry to hijack your thread, I smell a musty mildew smell when I turn my heat/air on for the first few seconds, anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this?

Try changing out the cabin filter under the hood, could be getting moldy.

Been dealing with the burning smell on and off for a month or so (01V8 80K), mainly when the engine is revving at moderate-high rpm's. I live in MN so I often find my tires spinning (yes, I take off the traction control when spinning). Engine light came on Sunday and the engine started knocking severely at low rpm's, felt like it was about to bog out. Brought her in to the dealership only to find out four engine coils needed to be replaced. One was completely out and the other three were damaged. They said that two were caused by oil originating from leaky gaskets and the other two were supposedly caused by water damage?! Warranty doesn't cover it if it is caused by water damage and now I gotta pay $450 out of pocket! I don't know how the same parts could go out at the same time for completely different reasons and can they really be so sure?! I feel like I'm gettin poked. Help!
