socket size for oil pan

Thanks and it is the oil pan bolts. Oh what is the recommended torque on the pan bolts?

2 steps - 14 lb/ft., then an additional 60 degrees in sequence.

I think it is 10 mil

10 mil = .010" :p

So if one wanted to go around and test to see if any were loose, what would you recommend?

I don't know. I wouldn't fix it if it wasn't broke. If your pan gasket isn't leaking, then why mess with it? If it is, you probably need to replace it anyway.

I suppose if you used an old style beam type torque wrench, and used the above procedure, that you could figure out the approximate torque required during the 60 degree step.

how important is the torque and tightening sequence

Important enough that Ford went to the trouble of specifying it, but in reality, who knows? If your pan leaks, then I guess you'll know it was important.

You never want to tighten aything with a gasket in a circular sequence. Following that exact sequence is probably not super critical. The main thing is to always follow an alternating criss-cross pattern starting in the middle and working your way out.

Following this sequence likely minimizes the the chance of a leak due to a kink in the gasket. Since Ford would be providing the sequence to their factories and dealer mechanics there was likely some level of engineering and testing to identify the best sequence.

if its NOT leaking dont touch it you can tighten it and caUSE A LEAK! gaskets get old and brittle
