I've had this issue for a while now on my 06. It got bad enough in the last few months that the tip of my shoe was starting to hit the lever above the pedal when braking (not good).

I replaced the assembly yesterday with a used one from e-bay, and all is well now. I had to remove the steering column to be able to get the pedal assembly out and back in.

Here it is with the new pedal assembly in. The bits of foam on the floor were knocked off the booster bellows when I pulled the old assembly out.

How the heck did you manage to get that much lateral movement over the years. Can't say I've seen that much play in anything I've ever owned before.

It was much less than that for years, then a few months ago it was suddenly that much. There was actually a metal pin (of sorts) in there that broke.

Lincoln LS metal pin on brake pedal assembly broken. SPLENDID

Had to do a similar job on the clutch pedal on my Ford F-100. Ended up replacing the pin and using Hurst shifter steel bushings to clean-up the 'wallowed-out' hole in the pedal arm. I must have monkeyed with that lash-up for a week before it was satisfactory.
