So just this morning my car started sputtering and shuddering at idle and just off idle. No codes pending or active. I'm thinking of either fuel filter or a coil pack. One thing that makes methink its not the fuel filter is the sound the air filter box makes as it shudders. It sounds like a little man in there knocking to get out. Any ideas??

Thats what mine was doing before and after changeing the IAC, Fuel Pump, vacuum leak search, cleaning the MAF sensor and changing O2's. I replaced a coil pack and it the miss went away.
However I do think I was having multiple failures at once, since this was after the car went over 100K miles.

Check your plugs to see if one looks like different than the others and throw a meter on the coils to see if anything stands out right away. Its all still work, however the effort maybe worth it.

how did you pull the codes and the codes pending?? do you work at a dealer or have autogrown check it, if you work at a dealer than i can tell you exactlly what to do with WDS or IDS
Actually I dont work at a dealership, I work for the DOD. When I first bought the car I was having some CEL lights so I bought a cheapy $100 code scanner at Wally World. Works well enough so far. By far more convenient than anything else.
As an update to my original problem, I got a CEL on my way to work yesterday. P0308 IIRC. Cylinder 8 Misfire. On my way to the Ford dealer to grab a coil pack now.

gotcha if you had the good scanners you could pull up the spark line and see what cyl is dropping off
