I have a 2000 LS-8 with OEM moonroof. I find that when I open the moonroof it squeaks and groans if I park the car out in the sun, This does not happen on cooler days or in the shade. Is this a lubrication issue and if so can I do this myself? I am not much of a car guy so I would need to know what type of lubricant and where to apply it. I have asked my dealer several times to lubricate this but they don't seem to address it at all. Everytime I leave it in the sun, it makes noise.

I would try some dry graphite grease on any of the moving parts. It should be available at any auto parts store. I noticed my tracks look like they have some kind of lithum grease on them but that can be messy so I would try graphite.

I would not use a dry lubricant since it may sprinkle all over the inside of the car and on you. Graphite makes a real mess. Now, if you had a grease, maybe that would work.

I am not sure what kind of lube is supposed to be there, but I like something like a gooey grease like Rocol or a general purpose grease that is tacky. I have some Dow Corning Silicone grease that I like to use on things, maybe that would work, it is clear and quite sticky. Some autoparts stores have a good silicone grease for things like the rubber weather seals etc.

You want a greasay that sticks well and won't melt and if possible doesn't have a lot of color to it.

Just some ideas. You might also check the Webasto website, maybe they have a techical contact or info. They make many of Fords moonroofs.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

There is some stuff out there called slydeglide (I think) at NAPA and it is an awsome silcone grease. It is made for caliper bolts so it should hold up to heat very well. Also it is odorless (atleast to me) and very very slick.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I definitely try one of these although the dry graphite sounds messy :)

I believe lithium grease is used to lubricate the sunroof components. Graphite spray likely won't work in this situation. You can pick up a can of lithium grease at any auto parts store. You may also want to consider cleaning and lubricating the rubber seal around the sunroof. Clean the rubber with a good all-purpose cleaner, and then lubricate it with a rubber dressing (something like Armor All)

Also, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but based on your description, I fear your sunroof motor may be on the way out. I've heard of this happening with other LS cars having the same symptoms.

Yikes, I hope not! This is why I'm hoping it's only a lubrication issue. The squealing noise does not occure in cold weather. I was thinking about using lithium grease as well--I need it for my Precor elliptical also :D Hopefully it's heat-resistant.

“squealing” is usually do to a lack of lubrication :D
