Just bought a 1996 Lincoln Towncar Executive series with 74,000 miles. Hear loud pitched squeal when turning wheel to left but not to right. Power steering fluid checks OK. Also, Check Engine light goes on periodically. When I remove negative terminal from battery and reattach it the light goes out. Do I need to check emissions or PCV? Mileage is lousy on road at 65 mph (20 mpg) versus my other 1996 Lincoln Towncar that gets 26 mpg.

I had the same problem in my Crown Vic. I replaced the PS fluid with Mobil 1 ATF and it went away.

It's probably your oxygen sensors. 10-year-old car with 76,000 on the clock? Probably the O2's.

O2 sensors set a code RIGHT away. This is going to be something EVAP related. (Most of the time it'll take 2-3 drive cycles to set a check engine light)

Hook it up to a scanner and see what it says!
