Well I have this habit and I'm curious if it really is practical.

Once I put my key in the ignition, I almost always wait for all "dings" to stop before starting my LS. Then, once it is started, I wait for the next set of "dings" to stop again prior to pulling it out of park.

Is this obsessive? haha. Do the warning "dings" have anything to do with starting the car??

Well I wouldnt call it obsessive, but I just start the thing. I don't have any problems like that, but everyone has somethign unique about what they do with their cars. For example, I always wait until the Revs go down before pulling out and I always park by real nice cars.

Probalby not a problem, just a little weird.

During the startup, there are some diagnostics that are run and I think a few of them time out when the last ding is done, so maybe you are missing a diagnostic or two or something else is not getting set or turning off, if you let the dings finish. It is probably better to start right away, but I am pretty sure nothing important is happening if you wait for the dings.

In the old days, you didn't like to let it sit thru the dings since there was a tiny chance you might have the distributor land just right and cause some burning of the points etc. No car I know of has this problem now and most drivers don't know what I meant by points unless it was on their license.

As far as the second set of dings, that may actually be a good thing, especially in freezing weather. This lets the oil circulate a few seconds before you drive away. Most manuals say the car is ready within 30 seconds of starting. I would guess your dings are giving it the time it needs.

I wouldn't worry about any of it, not unless you aslo turn around 3 times before you sit down, then you have a problem.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

I do the same thing with starting but not pulling out of park. Thank god for distributless ignitions because I have burnt many points up in my mustang by turing the key forward instead backward to listen to the radio
