so my mother has a 2005 ford escape with 50k miles on it. She has been having some issues with the A/C and her car died at one point (so she says) so she took it into firestone near her and after 24hrs in their shop they said she needs a new head gasket and were gonna charge 3k for it. My mother shocked by the price wanted a second opinion and drove it to the Ford dealership, they call her no more than 2hrs later and told her it's actually the air conditioner/ intake valve hose which will run no more than 700 including labor.

STEALERSHIP WIN!

yeah thats a real win, 700 bucks for a hose and 5 minutes labor!!!! i'd be all over that. i'd rather let firestone do the head gasket even if it doesnt need it vs ford's 700 dollar hose!

fyi the firestone has terrible reviews and t took them 24hrs because the manager tried looking into the problem himself.

Plus I noticed her car was leaking water so I knew her AC was gonna be an issue

dude a new headgasket on a car with 50k miles? if you did that you'd be called a jack@ss by everyone here!

yea but not to be a d*ck....but 700 for a hose is grounds for being called a jacka$$ too....take it to a good independent shop around you and get another opinion...

Firestone has always been known to find issues that aren't even wrong with a car, especially if a woman takes a car there. Pete, you could probably do the hose for your mother about $680 cheaper.

you realize the 700 is MAX what it will be costing, and the price includes diagnostic, ac, hose, labor

yall need to read what I say a lil better...or maybe I should BOLD it

and around here they are also pricks as much as jiffy lube. irestone wanted me to get new rotors (the ones I got from r1 concepts) after only having them for 4-5 months!

Is it an actual air conditioner line? If so that will require a lot more than just swapping the hose...the system would have to be evacuated, the dryer and orifice potentially replaced, and the system properly refilled. $700 still might be a little steep, but it may not be as simple as swapping a hose.

still not sure how they made the "bad head gasket" connection to AC issues. I think I paid around $400-500 to have a similar procedure done on the Lincoln Mark VIII from a local shop. So that doesn't sound to bad for a 2005 vehicle from the dealership.

when my AC was out of fluid it cost between 300-400 to get it done at firestone :p

Rape, that is what I would say If I paid those prices for any of those services.

you paid 400 to refill the a/c with freon? You could've went to a autoparts place and gotten acouple bottles and a freon refill kit for under 30.

Firestone can suck it.

I went there twice and both times I was sickened. It was for an alignment and after they finished they said that the car has no rear camber adjustment (bs) and that there is not enough adjustment on the front to set the castor properly. While I am waiting for the car a little old lady with a Town Car (maybe 04 or 05) and they say she HAS TO HAVE a fuel system cleaning for $400 or the car WILL break down. Then they said she needs a trans fluid flush for another $380 and that she also needs new tie rods and ball joints and that will be another $1600. To my astonishment the lady says ok to it all.
So 10 days latter I get under my car and see that there is a ton of castor adjustment left in both directions, its like the guy didnt know the inner nut actually moved on the strut rod. So I call them up and he says bring it in now and he will get it on the rack instantly. I bring it in and wait. I see the same little old lady standing at the counter and them saying "Well you should have had the trans filter replaced with the trans flush and thats why its slipping now. We can replace it and flush the system again for $560" "Also your ball joints are shot." She said she just had them replace the ball joints and he says they only did the drivers side.
In the mean time another guy there is asking why his van is in the air (company truck) since they were just replacing the wipers and air filter. The service writter said they were doing an oil change to which the customer said its supposed to be done and they already had the oil drained. So he says fine and sits down. 45 minutes later they still have not brought my car in to correct the alignment and then they call the guy back to the counter and say "Your air filter and wipers are done" and the guy asks about the oil change and the same service writter says "We didnt change the oil" So the guy says "You just told me you were changing the oil and that it was drained" to which the service writter said "I never said that, who told you that?"
At that statement I walked over to the counter and said "Give me my keys" "Oh, but sir, we havent done your car yet" I said "You worthless focks will never do my car. Now gimme my focking keys!" On the way out I told the old lady they screwed her out of $4000 and she should get a lawyer.

I have only heard stories like that before about shops but to see it first hand was a shocker for me.

I need to learn to weld and also need my own alignment tools. Then I wouldnt ever have to rely on a shop.

That's what my mother texted me...I was too busy at work to check and find the problem for her. She only knows how much it was gonna cost.
