I was driving yesterday and a Subaru STi turbo thing was racing everyone next to him, from a pickup to minivans. I was actually amazed how fast that stupid car was even with three teenage kids inside. But the driver wasnt too experienced with a manual tranny cause you could definately tell when he shifted. But that got me to thinking....wouldnt a manual tranny somewhat reduce a turbos ability to perform ? Just a thought.

those things are damn fast. manuals are fine w/turbos. If you have a slower spooling turbo (most are quite quick now) there are methods for shifting and not losing boost. When I had my talon if I was really wanting to boogy (@ strip) would not take my foot off accelerator while shifting...

I am the last person who's gonna race, but that 4 door car with atleast 500 lbs of teenagers took off like a rocket. I was very amazed. He was racing everything driving down the road.

very light and like 300 horsepower I think. IIRC I think they are 0-60 in like 5.1....

They compete with boxters on 0-60, all wheel drive, insane handling.... I wanted one instead of my LS but insurance =x

Yeah those cars are very quick, 300hp AWD. turbocharged boxster engine, hoodscoop intercooler... Unfortunately they have no top end and if you try to launch one from a stop you will destroy the tranny.

If you know how to launch an AWD car the tranz should hold up. The problems with the tranz is when you start to slam threw the gears you will tear up the syncros. I worked at a Hi preformance Subaru shop and all I can say is that Subies suck.

Beacup you also had a DSM? I just sold mine after 4 years of work. I don't miss the car but I do miss the power!

P.s. If anyone is in the market for an AWD turbo car buy an EVO you can't go wrong.

Don't evo's stall if something loud is near, a.k.a. a V8 with exhaust etc. LS1tech.com had a big forum on that.

Yeah I had 91 talon. Thing was absolutely ridiculously fast. mine was FWD. I killed the tranny spinning the tires at like 60 getting onto a freeway onramp. oh well, that was a long time ago.

I had an FWD and my last car was AWD. In my fwd I murdered 4 race transmissions. Fwd with any power suck until 60 mph! The AWD lit up the tire all the way threw second gear. And there is nutting like a 1.6 60 ft on street tires.

I have bin thinking about getting a RX-7 twin turbo. I alway loved the look's of the car and I am quite intreged by the wankle engine.

Just because the Evo stalled dose not mean he was not going to win!

sad truth is an evo could wait until the v8's a ways up the road, start the engine and still smoke the V8....

Same can be said the other way around. The Evo is a tuner car.

After mods scoobys can be deadly, great ralley cars.

i can attest that the trans will snap in the subaru, saw a kid at the drags with a new one (like 300 miles) snapped it after two passes, towed it back to subaru and they said no warranty because the service manager saw him racing at the drags, he was standing next to me when it happened.. doh! took the input shaft clean off the trans... on the flip side the evo is fast but the clutch will expire easily.. a buddy's car lost the clutch in 16k and the mitsu rep said "abuse" and no warranty..... i thought these were meant to be driven hard?? "rally cars" or something....

Scoobys are simply not designed for drag..

Im sure the owner of the evo is pretty responsible for burnin up his clutch.

They are built pretty tough, you can expect to fix a lot of things in a car if you race a lot. The 4banger tuner cars are making so much power from small engines, usually tranny isn't the fist mod on peoples list. Most modes go in this order: Intake Exhaust, Header, Suspension, verious turbo upgrades, trannys usually are not first on the list of mods.. The such harsh conditions involved in racing pushes everything and things are bound to break.

Well a couple of good launches and the stock clutch will be toast. The main problem with the AWD car is that there really is not that much room for a large clutch, so they have to make due. I have never seen a snapped input shaft on a subie yet. I have seen diff's exploded along with stock and re gear sets. I bet the guy with the subie was trying to launch over 6,000 rpm or on the rev limiter!

At the auto-cross events - it is all full of WRXs and EVOs - and they do very well - 4-wheel drive, good power, good handling, turning,....

and most compete in a stock class - ;(

Mitsu claims they now check the SCCA membership listings and automatically void your warranty if your name and EVO appear on there.

The fun in these cars is making anywhere from 400-600hp out of a 2.0L engine (or 2.4) with less than 2K in upgrades.... And easy on many of these engines that come with factory turbos. If driven correctly they can last. I had 175K on my Talon when I finally killed the tranny. My LS has 60K now and the tranny is about shot...

Tell that to the new Z06:N

Evo's are impressive cars...as are the Subarus. Neither can compare to a well prepped Supra, but they are very fast for the money you have to spend to get them there. A lot of bang for the buck there.

But I would LOVE to have one shut off his motor and wait for me to leave before he started and left. He had better not have any money on it. I don't have much of a problem with 99% of the Evo's.

Oh yea...I'm in my (cough cough) "almost stock" 04 Cobra. There are a lot of faster cars out there than me, but I can hold my own against the vast majority.

i had the liberty of racing one at atco (EVO) he ran a 12.02 and top speed of 115 i was shocked
