sticky $hit

i just noticed a few weeks ago that on pillar between the windows..on both sides of the car. theres some sticky :q:q:q:q on em. like it had something on that fell off. its a half inch thick line running from the top to bottom. very unsightly, i canty stand it.. why is it there and what can i buy to get it off.
