I was driving home last night and the car started cutting out. Almost like it was running out of gas. it got worse as I went on tell finally I had to pull over. Dark smoke started coming out from under the hood. It was so bad I thought it might start on fire so I didn't want to open the hood. I'm not sure but it looked like it was also coming out of the exhaust tried to start it a couple times and it sounded like the engine was coming apart. Like a bad rod banging around in it. Started calling for a tow, sitting on the side of the highway at night with cars and semi's going by at 80+ lots of fun for sure.

Anyway couldn't get anyone to answer their phone. So I tried to start it again (the 10th time) and it started. It was a bit rough but I went about a mile and it started to miss again. Polled over and waited a few minutes and started it back up. Went slow at first then it was running OK (felt like it was missing a bit) but it keep going. stopped and got gas and lift the hood. As normal couldn't see anything. Now it was running OK and got it home. while coming back home I punched it and it ran like normal, any Ideas?

Thanks for any advice.

Do you have a chip by any chance? My car was stalling out/cutting out on me because the chip got loose.

sounds to me like you had a wire short out. In order for you to see smoke coming out from under the hood there has to be a lot of smoke. You would only see dark smoke out of your exhaust if it was missing or if it was internal to the engine. I would search around for a burnt wire. It probably act as a fuse, shorted out, got hot, burned the insulation off (smoke) and then fell apart.
