96 Base model sunroof
- it has this plastic frame around the perimeter that's firmly attached to the glass at the long front side edge, the other 3 edges hang down
-it doesn't make much noise while driving when the glass is all the way fwd/closed; when the glass is 50-100% recessed it makes a pretty annoying plastic type rattle while driving
-----
should it be adhered to the glass all the way around? the sides don't fully conform to the shape of glass
- I temp-ed the frame up in place against the glass with blue painter's tap and went for a quick test drive: most of the noise went away
-should I use some semi permanent adhesive or am I missing a mechanical fastener somewhere?

I know our cars are getting old but this is the first case ever reported regarding moonroof noise issue I've heard.

mine does this. rattles. that plastic trim piece you taped.
but my sunroof was forcibly removed by the wind at 130 mph so i'm not surprised.

Mine has recently started making a rattle but mines caused by big bass flexing it 3/4" outward. but mine is a metal sound along the front. ill look at mine tomorrow and see if that part should be attatched

Mine makes the same noise you described (plastic). My shade also slides forward or backward giving a large amount of gas or braking. If I put my fingers up there the noise goes away. I haven't put much thought into it yet besides it is on my todo list also. Let me know what you find out. I will be watching this thread!

Spree your shade my be off its track. my cousin pushed on mine a couple of days ago trying to stop the flexing and it easily popped off of the track. i havent had time to stop and put it back on track yet. i tried at a stoplight but it doesnt seem to go in as easy as it popped out

So your saying it just need's pushed back up ^ into the track?? It slides back and forth way to easy. When driving normally with the roof open, it will close by itself from the wind. Gets annoying pushing it open constantly.

no pulled down. mine got pushed up of track and now i can pretty much floor it to slide it open and break pretty good to close it. but you have to figure out how to get it back in track. i tried for a couple minutes at a redlight but couldnt get it to bend enough to pop both sides in

I went and looked at a 98 lsc today; it's sunroof has a cool wind deflector that sticks up along the front edge of the roof opening when the window is open; mine does not have this. Is it supposed to?

Gen 1s don't have the deflector.

And all the Gen1 roofs I looked at were spot-welded to the roof from the inside.. its a PITA pulling them.

I need a track for mine. Got one from Gman a while back , but of course it was already broken -_-

I'm pretty sure you can't cross Gen the roof, the glass may be the same size, but the track systems are totally different. Gen2 roofs have studs to secure the tracks

hdliner remove.jpgThis is from my 95 book about the slider. I remember it had two tabs glued at the front, about 1"x1" foam that looked like they dragged on the glass.

Gen 1 and gen 2 sunroofs are totally different. Glass is a different size, and gen 1's the track assembly is removed from the top, outside of the car. Gen 2's you have to remove the headliner, and take it down from inside the car. I've changed tracks in both generations and gen 1's are easier in my opinion. This is talking about factory installed sunroofs only. I haven't changed one of the aftermarket ones.

Are you talking about the plastic trim pieces that cover the tracks? They may have slid out of there mount. Simple fix. Or maybe you just need to replace them . If that's the case, give me a holler, and I'll see if I can get a set from one of the wrecking yards close to me. is you roof switch a single toggle? Or multiple switch system?

do the trim pieces have a function? or are they just to make it pretty?

mine tracks and closes fine, that plastic one-piece square frame around the perimeter is loose on the back end and rattles like crazy...my fabric/sunshade cover closes fine also.
If there's something missing I need to replace I don't know what it is...haven't seen it. Just want to get rid of the rattling.

mine works, and rattles, like this:

Mine doesn't do that! Shade opens/closes fine. It actually opens/closes to easy. Step on the brake and it closes. Give it gas and it opens (it didn't always do that). The plastic thing does vibrate a little when sunroof and shade are closed. I believe it's the plastic thing vibrating. Whatever is suppose to hold it open or closed has failed. Otherwise everything works just fine.

for?

the shade (cloth cover) fuctions fine....I'm trying to get rid of the plastic rattling from the border piece on the glass

Haha I think that was referencing the other guy that put hood pins on his car because the latch was sticking..

That one piece just isn't mounted like it should be anymore. May have been held in with spot weld or something. My 94 never rattled but I never used it much either. If I did, I would only pop up the back side. I couldn't begin to tell you what holds that framing down back there. If I had to listen to that though, I'd leave it closed....
