Soooo.... since i got my '98 mark viii LSC over a year ago, i've been dreaming of supercharging it. Now that I have it back to "original" condition (new air ride etc) it's time to start making it faster.... :)


I'm thinking it could take 8-10 PSI same as many people run in their cobra mustangs, does this seem reasonable? are engine internals are identical?


I'm hoping there is a one-stop kit i can buy that includes everything, if i have to hunt down a bazillion parts and fabricate things up, this project will never happen.

I've googled but i can't seem to come up with much. anybody know of somewhere that sells them?

so if i got that kit, i would have to modify the water pipe, and the alternator bracket is all?

i noticed the mustang cobras have are rated for ~15 more horsepower than the mk 8's (290 vs 305). what is different about them, is it the intake? and would a cobra intake swap be a good idea?

It's the intake and a slight bump in duration on the cams.

Yes, I would absolutely swap to the Cobra intake. N/A or blown, the Cobra intake is far superior to the stock Gen2 manifold.

Consider 400rwhp to be the edge of the safe zone on our internals. You could perhaps go a bit more with a very good tune and safe monitoring. Putting on a pulley for 10psi might spell disaster. If you want to go 450+rwhp, go forged.

so differences between cobras and LSC's are:
intake, cams, cast internals?

would 400hp blow up my trans?
i suppose tuning would be in order, can the trans be tuned for a firmer shift so it lives longer?
and, is the tuning something i can do myself or do i need to go to a shop to get it dynotuned (more $)

does 400hp on a $4,000 budget seem reasonable?
what other supporting mods would i need, headers? high flow cats? cobra intake?
just the upper plenum or is the lower different too?
will a cobra intake fit beneath my hood without mods and stuff? (does the intake even matter if its under boost?)
 
Cobra intake will fit under a Gen2 hood with some slight shaving of the hood.. Gen1s are a whole other ball game
No forged internals in a Mark
 
First :W Please do a little searching these things have been discussed to death on here and you could easily find answers to most of your questions and you won't seem so :shifty: uninformed.

nope. no trac lock either. another common misconception.

you could do it yourself, yes. but i suggest paying someone who knows what they are doing. it ain't easy.

lower is also different for the cobra intake. you need upper and lower.

fits under a 2nd gen hood. i think it will fit under a first gen hood, but not easily.

probably. using the cobra intake means off the shelf blower kits are easier to install with less custom parts. and they flow better NA.
 
Chris it'll fit under a Gen1 hood if your space the cradle, and a few other things, pretty sure you'd still end up trimming some hood too.

rhauf, boost will do a better job at masking the Gen2 intake issue via forced induction but the restriction is still there regardless. Most and close to all Gen2s with a blower setup I have seen have the Cobra intake swap. I highly suggest full exhaust with headers also to maximize your setup along with an aggressive stall converter to keep the rpms high for producing boost especially on a centrifugal type setup. Honestly, you won't be able to do this all for $4000. Even considering a used blower for a theoretical $1500ish, you could easily spend twice that completing the setup. Exhaust, stall converter, tuning, fuel system upgrades, intercooling, gauges inside for monitoring, drag radials, etc.

There is one metal tab that needs to be cut off on the Gen2 hood. That's it. And actually, I bent my tab back so I didn't cut anything. :D
 
Well thanks for all the info guys.

this will give me quite a bit to think about for a while.

I was hoping to do something in the sub $3,000 range (which is still unafforable at my present time) but looks like it'll take a bit closer to $5-6k to get things done right.

i suppose for now i'll settle for just getting a nice paint job and new speakers,
but its a future mod to look forward to ;)
 
"enough" is reative to how quick or how fast you want to go. I for one never have "enough" lol
 
On a DOHC motor when you have to buy 2 or 4 of anything money becomes an issue.
A little number x a big number is a big number every time... No matter how you do your math.

Mark VIII's have 6 bolt cast crankshafts.

Cobra's have 8 bolt forged crankshafts.

Besides the intake cams and the intakes, another factor in the rated HP difference are the stock tunes.

Blower was $2500 used
ATI (must have) crank pulley $90
90MM Lightning MAF $50 used
96-98 Cobra tube $20
Filter and adapter plate $70
Injectors $125
Tuner $200 used (Only use SCT XCal 2)
Dyno tune $350ish
Cobra fuel rail $50ish used
New intaake gaskets and misc hardware $250
Have to lengthen some wires, relocate the IAT sensor with a GT500 one under the blower $50
Goodyear Gatorback belt (all others will slip)


That will run 7.4-9 psi depending on ambient air temps. Motors internals can handle that.

LaserSVT, that's a pretty nice setup.
now if only i could get that in "kit" form. as in, buy everything all at once and not have to hunt down every part. or, do you have specifics or part numbers for it?
