ORLEANS - The mayor of New Orleans is seething over what he sees as the federal government's slow response to Hurricane Katrina.

Mayor Ray Nagin gave an interview to WWL Radio Thursday night and told listeners that he needs troops and hundreds of buses to get refugees out.

"They don't have a clue what's going on down there," Nagin said. "They flew down here one time two days after the doggone event was over with TV cameras, AP reporters, all kind of goddamn — excuse my French everybody in America, but I am pissed."

Nagin accused state and federal officials of "playing games" and "spinning for the cameras." He says he keeps hearing that help is coming, but "there's no beef."

Congress is rushing through an aid package of more than $10 billion and the Pentagon is promising 1,400 National Guardsmen.

He's right to be pissed. This is a government ready to respond to terrorist actions? We get better response for disasters half a world away. Divert all funds being wasted on foreign aid, support of illegal aliens and behavior problems in Africa (AIDS) and use it to help the people that it was taken from.

National Guard, Corps of Engineers move into New Orleans

The military stepped up its operations Friday in response to Hurricane Katrina, delivering much-needed aid to thousands of stranded people in New Orleans and working to plug levee breaches so the city could eventually be drained.

Four days after the hurricane plowed into the Gulf of Mexico coastline, thousands of Army National Guard troops arrived in downtown New Orleans, one of the hardest hit areas where tens of thousands of residents have been stranded without water, food, shelter and medical care.

Congress passed $10.5 billion in emergency funding Friday to support Federal Emergency Management Agency operations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

The primary focus for FEMA and the Coast Guard continued to be lifesaving efforts, including search and rescue operations and helping those with the most urgent needs. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff increased the number of Coast Guard reservists being recalled to active duty to 800.

Thousands of additional National Guard troops poured into the region, many of them military police helping to provide security and restore law and order so relief operations could continue. According to National Guard Bureau officials, by Friday afternoon, there were more than 15,000 National Guardsmen; 7,800 active-duty military personnel; 4,000 Coast Guard members; more than 400 federal law enforcement officers; and 61 FEMA response teams deployed to affected areas.

The number of Guard troops in the region was expected to rise to 30,000 over the weekend. The troops were assisting law enforcement agencies with traffic control and security; transporting and distributing food, water and ice; conducting searches and rescues; providing generators; and carrying out other missions to protect life and property, Guard officials said.

Lt. Gen. Steven Blum, head of the National Guard Bureau, said 7,000 soldiers were being deployed to restore order in New Orleans.

Officials said more than 320,000 Guard soldiers and airmen from every state, as well as their equipment, were available to support emergency operations if needed.

The Army Corps of Engineers was working on a plan to drain water out of New Orleans. More than 400 employees were working in the city Friday, said said the chief of the Corps, Army Lt. Gen. Carl Strock. The plan entailed fixing some levees while breaching others to allow water to draw off.

Strock said the operation would take weeks, but declined to offer a more specific timeline.

He acknowledged that the city's levees were only built to sustain a Category 3 storm. Hurricane Katrina was a Category 5 storm shortly before it made landfall Monday morning. But Strock dismissed criticism that flood prevention projects have been underfunded.

"There was some discussion that had the flood protection of New Orleans been funded at a more vigorous rate that these projects would have been complete and this event would not have happened," he said. "It is my personal and my professional assessment that that is not the case."

"The other question is, in general is the civil works budget of the Army Corps of Engineers suffering because of the war in Iraq? Not in my opinion," he added.

Again, Joey, bad timing. Look above your silly post. That's twice in a row now.

:N

All I know is that days after the storm there was no help to be found for many people in the city. I watched video of people begging for food, water, and medical attention. I think I've seen more help given to Iraqis and Afghanis than our own people. It's disgusting.

Jesus H Christ. I am so pissed right now. My wife even put me over the edge. Everybody in this G'damn country is so quick to point fingers. Yes, the situtation is F'up'd. This type and scale of tragedy is new to us. We have never been here before. We will learn from it and it won't happen again. That is the way it has always been throughout our history. We suffer a tragedy, we learn from it and we understand how to prevent it from happening in the future.

Everybody take a step back and quit pointing fingers. Who expected punks to be running around with guns shooting at people, shooting at rescue workers, raping young girls in bathrooms. Come on. Get real. Everything in life that doesn't go perfectly can't be blamed on Bush. Sheesh. Enough already.

If you want to point fingers, point them at that worthless mayor in New Orleans. Oh that's right, we can't. He's black.

Chew on this. Bush told everybody to get out 2 days before the storm hit. He is on the record and was on TV saying it. Get out.

It was a mandatory evacuation! So why didn't the mayor of New Orleans use his buses to get the people without cars or other means to get them out? Start pointing the finger there.

Ya, looks like these buses are doing a whole hell of a lot of good.

The responsiblility for New Orleans falls first to the Mayor. The New Orleans mayor is a good Democrat. In other words, he is completely incompetent, then whines and blames the nearest available Republican. Contrast his behavior with the decisive leadership of Rudy Guiliani, Republican, in NYC after Sept. 11.

The second responsibility for the city of New Orleans falls to the Governor of Louisiana, which includes calling out the National Guard. Does Louisiana even have a governor?? Anyone seen her? It is rumored she is wandering around her office "overwhelmed" and crying. Another good Democrat. Contrast her behavior with the decisive leadership of Haley Barbour, Republican, in neighboring Mississippi.

When the Federal relief began arriving in New Orleans, they were shot at. The breakdown in law enforcement is ENTIRELY the responsiblity of the Mayor and the Governor. We have, in this country, City Police, County Sheriffs, and State Police. Our cities are not patrolled by Federal Police.

Now that Bush is involved, doing the job of these good Democrats, things are rapidly improving. So Joey, to answer your question, yep, GW is doing a great job. And he's the only one.

AMEN, BROTHER!! I didn't hear Giuliani ONE TIME blame Bush for 9/11. He just sucked it up like a man and LED HIS CITY OUT OF THE TRAGEDY. What a hero. These Dems are sorry excuses for elected officials.

I can't believe someone beat me to this. That is what I get for going to bed.

RB3. You hit the grand slam. The useless Democrat Governor had 6000 National Guardsmen at her disposal and she also controlled 1200 state police. She is the most culpable.

The 'I won't take responsibility for anything' Democrat Mayor from what I have heard has failed on every level to manage this situation.

Just remember, the Governor has to go to the federal government in order for the federal government to get involved. Otherwise the government sits on the sidelines. She took 2 days to make the decision to get them invloved.

This problem lies directly on the laps of the people in 'local' control and RB3 is right that Bush has come to save the day................................again!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys are being really :q:q:q:qty about this. Just like the media most everyone here has gotten political about it and trying to point fingers. Trust me if any of you were down here to see the devastation first hand you would not being saying some of the things you are saying. It burns me the hell up!!!!

You may have seen pictures on tv but its not the same. OMG I have friends that are staying with me that are homeless. I have friends that dont know what they have to go back to yet.

Who cares at this point who did what and who said what. There will be plenty of time to reflect on the good and bad decisions made. NOW IS NOT THE TIME. We are all only human and no one can make the best decisions all of the time.

It just amazes me how some of the media point the finger at Bush for everything and other point to the Gov. of Louisiana. All this time and energy could be better focused to help out everyone that was affected by this.

Those of us who believe in our President are forced into a defensive posture as the media in this country swings into attack mode to again attack Bush however they can.

I have not been there but I can understand your sentiments, actually living through it. My posts are intended to serve the purpose that it is ridiculous to start pointing fingers. So some of us point out that if the media wants to make this political and only George Bush is to blame and the media allows black rap artists to go live on TV during fund raisers to say sh!t like 'Bush hates black people', this is the response you are going to get from those of us who support our Commander-in-Chief because we are not going to let the media get away with slandering and libeling our President.

Think about how some of us feel when all we see is finger pointing at our President, like he is some kind of god that should swoop in on Air Force One and rescue everybody by himself. I hate turning on the TV because it is so unfair and so unbalanced.

And now Hillary is getting alot of press for her rant on the US Oil companies manipulating the futures market. At least in this area of manipulation, she is an EXPERT.
