For all of you who have radars ( I don't)

I recently heard an advertisement on the radio for something called the Phaser II. I had a Viper radar detector before and I hated all the beeping I got when I had it so I never purchased another of those damn things... this new phaser thing IS something i may go back to using..

It is not a radar detector but a scrambler.. what cops are doing now is that they turn on their radar at the last minute to get a reading on ur speed.. so u are warned too late that a cop is attempting to ticket u... the phaser scrambles the signal from the radar at all times.. so he cant get a reading.. it is NOT illegal and mounts on the front windshield..

things that cought my attention..

50$ for the first month.. then 2 payments of 75$ for the following two months.. i thought 200 was a little too steep for me..

they will cover all speeding tickets for 1 year.. i thought this was great.. if u get a speeding ticket the first year of having the phaser.. they will pay for the ticket.. they dont have a "roof" on the plan either.. so if u get 50 tickets (even though ur over ur point limit) they will pay however many tickets u get... pretty cool.. after 1 ticket i woulda gotten my money back for it...

anyways.. ya.. its outthere if anyone is interested.. i can also look up the number for it if u want to give them a call.. i will tell u now. i called and they are a little pushy..

sorry for being so long.. jus wanted to avoid too many questions.. and my boss isnt at work.. :beer

interesting.. maybe i should buy one and call that guy.. tell him i want 1,000,000 for my wasted time and anguish for purshasing a phoney device

There have been magazine tests on this type device over the years and all the "Legal" ones did nothing. Car and Driver often has good articles on detectors and scramblers every few years.

Anything that actually sends out a scrambled RF signal is a transmitter and is definitely illegal. I have not read of any legal laser scrambler, but I think those might be in the grey zone as far a transmitter legality.

The biggest problem with scramblers and detectors now a days is what frequency are you covering? There are so many RF and laser bands now that it is difficult for any one product to cover them all. Being off just a couple percent or so means you have NO protection. So you have to play the odds and get one that covers the most common bands.

Detectors are quite good, you just need to learn how to interpret their signals and when to ignore the false ones. Most users become very good at it. But as you said the instant on radars are more of a problem. What you need to do here is to be alert to signals bouncing off cars way ahead of you. The detectors can "see" the radar way before the radar can see you. So you need to pick up the reflection from cars ahead.

The problem with this method is that if you are out where traffic is very light and there are hiding places, then the cop has a good shot at you without early warning from the previous customer. Those occasions require you to be more cautious and drive slower perhaps.

Always have a rabbit. You know, the guy zipping in and out of traffic, running ahead of the pack. He will trigger warnings for you and often acts as a decoy.

In owning detectors since sometime in the 1980,s I have NEVER, yet, gotten a radar ticket and have been warned off of several. It is the other stupid things I do that get me in trouble now.

Good Luck, and I probably wouldn't waste money on a scrabler.

Instant radar is not as bad as POP radar.

Most Detectors (actually, I only know the Valentine One that can catch it - could be others), won't even see POP radar.

Get yourself a Good detector (read a Valentine One) and use your common sense when driving. You'll be fine.
