hey just a quick question..how much does it typically cost to replace the thermostat housing? tried search other threads but couldn't find one which was specific enough. thanks!

Need to replace all the plastic parts, not just the housing. From what others say when one part fails the rest of them follow within a month. I decided to take the advice of the others and did the entire job in one go. My local Lincoln dealer quoted 2000.00 to replace all the hard plastic but not all the rubber lines. I did the job myself for about 300 or so in parts. The thermostat housing itself cost me 41.32 from Silver State Ford. These guys seem to have pretty much any part you need. I wound up not ordering all the seals I needed, and the local Lincoln dealer didn't have them and it was going to take them a couple of weeks to get them in. The local Jag dealer had them in the next day.

hmm okay. so $450 isn't a rip off? that's what my mechanic quoted me. I just wanted to make sure it was an alright deal first or if I should look elsewhere

Just the thermostat housing for $450? My thermostat stuck last week so I had them change the housing also, total price $230 including the diagnostic fee.

It's a rip-off if he doesn't insist on changing all the plastic parts up front while he is at it. If he is doing this, then it's a good price.

Right. Just the thermostat housing for 450 would include the Woman Tax that some mechanics charge.

No he replaced the thermostat, housing, housing cover and all seals and gaskets.

lol, I was 9hrs on my Jaguar Thermostat housing replacement but I had a lunch, some sex in there somewhere, a nap and I was cleaning parts under hood ... plus pulled other parts. 2 days for everything including the Dccv and Aux pump.
painting parts, even watch some tv in the late evening.

$450 seems like a good deal for 9hrs to re&re just thermostat housing. lol

It always takes longer when you're doing your own. When you are a mechanic who is working on just another car, it doesn't take any time at all. I could have completed a thermostat housing replacement in under 2 hours, possibly an hour, start to finish including bleeding if I did this for a living and had all parts in hand when I started. Some mechanics will even reuse the same antifreeze if it doesn't look bad.

I know, I could have worked a bit faster as well I suppose but it was a lot of "oh no, this is dirty, needs cleaning or painting" as I went.

Like you said ... when you're working on your own car.

Plus taking pictures, referencing this forum, my service manual and such.
Also wanted to make sure I got it right, took my time, a hobbyist repair if you will.
Also had to run and borrow two separate tools to make the job easier as I didn't have those tools.

i just ordered the aluminum thermostat housing, all plastic pieces, and degas bottle for right around 300.
