I have a 7 year old son that I raise on my own and he's rarely ever been sick. he has had a few fevers and some colds but this past Sunday, he said he had a headache before he went to bed. I felt his head and no fever so I figured he had been on his computer too long or playing the X-Box too much.
Anyway, he wakes up Monday morning at 6 am and I'm about to get him ready for school. He tells me that he still has a headache. I felt of his head again and it was on fire. I went and bought him some "Fever All" because it has always worked on him before and the ER told me over the phone that I should try that instead of bringing him in, IF that was his only symptom. It's said that if fever is the only symptom, try to keep it down but let it ride for 3 days unless it gets out of control. His never got above 103.5 but I held it on average at around 101, sometimes at 102.
3rd day and he is still hot and has not had anything to eat. When I tried to get him to eat, he threw everything up so I said, OK, this is enough so I took him to the doctor that has seen him since birth. They swabbed his throat and nose and took a little blood. Then the doctor comes back with the news. He needs to be admitted into the hospital ASAP because he has pneumonia. That one snuck up on me and it was completely unexpected. So, I took him to the hospital where he was born which was in a different city from where we live now. 40 min away which I don't mind because Dr. visits aren't often enough to change his doctor. I spent the next 2 nights by his side in the hospital. His blood count was 22 when first tested, 20 the next day and Friday, it was down to 5. He was released and is doing perfect now.
Just wanted to say that the 3 day wait for fever only symptoms might not be the best choice because something else that you can't see could be creeping up inside them and you would never know it. He had a bacterial pneumonia and not a viral type. I never caught any type of sickness from him at all and he was beside me for the entire week. On the 2nd day, I would take them to the Dr. just in case something like this happens and you don't know it. I'll never wait 3 days again! He gets to go back to school Monday but he has to take some glue looking/smelling medicine for the next 10 days and has to be checked again in 2 weeks.
Pic below is with my phone camera on his first night after he fell asleep.
