While driving the car today, all of a sudden the car wants
to idle at about 3000 RPM. When I pulled to a stop sign I had to stand on
the brakes to hold it back. Turned it off in the driveway and tried
restarting and still idleing at 3000. What could cause this???

Thanks in advance!

Either your idle air motor stuck open or it has a short to power, remove it and make sure it it isn't stuck, if its not, suspect wiring.

It is more likely a stuck idle air control though, as it is very common.

No CEL and that is with many restarts. It will run 53 mph with out your foot on the pedal, just like the cruise is on. Where is this idle air valve and how do I check/correct it if it's stuck?? Thanks for the help!! I'm an old Jeep (CJ) guy, and this is the wifes car. So, I'm lost.

It looks something like this one pictured on this page:
http://www.muscularmustangs.com/iac.php

Yours should be a full aluminum body though instead of a plastic one.

If you tap on it with a hammer lightly with the engine running, the idle should return to normal, if it does, the best thing to do would be to replace it, but it can be cleaned (ford says no though on the cleaning them).

I cannot remember, since its been a while since I've worked on an LS, but if your engine has a beaty cover it will be under that. It has 2 8mm headed bolts holding it down, and the gasket should be able to be reused, as they hardly ever tear.

87 Dodge Omni Turbo - Next project will probably be an LS.....

Heck, my next project might be a Dodge turbo car. Especially with gas prices being well over $2 now. Cool!

If it is not the IAC, you might want to check the MAF also. I had a car do that to me in the past and it was a bad MAF.

Thanks, I'm starting to have a ton of money invested in it, but its all in fun. I work at a Ford dealership, so you can imagine the greif I get for owning a Dodge.

Smacked it with the hammer and all is good. Thanks for the info. It's greatly appreciated! :Beer

You have now discovered the IAC recalibration tool. Whack!

Glad to have helped, if it keeps happening you may end up just having to replace it.

I thought everybody liked Dodge... :) I owned 3 different little 2.2 cars in my time. I had a Lebaron GTS Turbo, but had to get rid of it before I moved as I had too much crap, and the transmission wouldn't make the trip. I had plans for that one too. :(

Oh...also, I have more money in repairs in my LS than I had in purchase and up-keep on two of those old vehicles. :)

There were so many 2.2 turbo's built we're quite lucky replacement parts are cheap, and they are fairly easy to work on.

But as with any car, modifications cost boatloads of money if you're goal is going fast. I'll probably have 7-8grand in my car by the time I hit my goal of 12.5 1/4 mile, as I should be low 13's this spring, (which is going be about 3000$ more than the 14.8's) Not all of that money is the engine, but a good 1500$ will be in the engine.

They fun little cars. The turbododge forums typically have pretty solid cars for sale, and they are the most technical forums I've read yet. Its getting hard to find good cancer free cars anymore of the 80's, but they're still around, and usually not very costly.
