Time for some bigger gears....

It is finally time for some new gears. I have decided to go with the 3.73's, but don't know where to start. I would like to buy the pumpkin with the 3.73's already in. I heard that Max at 5 Star Ford has the 96 Cobra Pumpkin with the 3.73's. Any other advice on where to purchase the gears would be appreciated.

Or if anyone is selling a pumpkin with 3.73's, that would be helpful. Just some info. on where to buy would be great.

If you've decided on 3.73s, 5 Star's deal can't be beat. Plus you can sell your old setup for about $150. It's a DIY swap with maybe a little help.
 
I concur. With gears, get new ones. With a chip, get a used one if it is setup the way you want.

Brad, that's nice you want 4.56's, but I want a RELIABLE daily driver, while having a lil extra power. I also don't want to spit out more money for a driveshaft. But who knows I might need a driveshaft anyhow. I would have already had NOS on the car, but I barely EVER go to the track, so therefore it would be useless. You on the other hand live about 10 minutes from the track, so I can see you "Trying" to make a Hotrod Lincoln. It's not all bout power and performance for me, I enjoy a comfortable ride and style here and there. If I had a second car as my daily driver, it would be a different story.

Well, jon if you get the 3.73s I will install them for you, I have done it a couple times now I think I got it down to a little over an hour
 
Awesome, thanks a lot Brad. Time does not mean a thing to me. We will take our time and get it done right. Maybe you could take a ride out here and we could work on it by my buddy's house. I wouldn't want to be all the way out in Joliet and something goes wrong. :dancefool
 
Your installing a new 3:73 pumpkin with the gears already installed, correct? Just don't forget to add the lube and friction modifier.

5 Star did ship their 3.73 Cobra units with lube and friction midifier. I would check to be sure at the time of the order and of course re-check the lube level at the time of the install.
 
I didn't know they shipped with the fluids inside. Thought you had to add them. My bad. But anyway, good advice Driller!

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I just got the car back from a minor brake job,now it has to go in for some front upper bushings. Once these maintanence needs are taken care of, I'll hit up Max and find out a price.

Oh, and I got one last question. I want to bring the car in to have the codes checked(diagnostics test), but I don't want to give Lincoln a crap load out of my wallet. is there any other way to check em and save ? Or is my best bet to have them do it.

Well I just recieved the call. Next tuesday the bushings, fuel pump, and regulator are getting installed. I'm finally getting off my arse, it's a great feeling, but my account aint liking it. :invasion: :invasion: :invasion: :invasion: :invasion: :invasion:
 
jon I have a really good scanner does more then read engine codes.
 
it told me the compression, how rich I was running, told me if all the injectors were working, couple of other things like that. oh and of course it reads the codes, I dont know the exact model but its a SnapOn
 
I dont see how its possible for it to tell you the compression.

Yea, that definately sounds like OBS-II stuff. The other scanner is for OBD-I and they do not interchange.
 
obd-1 (EEC-IV) has what is called "cylinder balance check" It shuts off the injectors one at a time and registers the rpm drop. If any cylinders fail to drop more than a certain percentage s compared to all others it is considered non-contributing and raises an error code. This will show a bad wire, plug, injector, or worn rings in that cylinder (but not identify which is the cause). There are only so many tests that the EEC-IV can perform....I can access them all with MY scanner. It does ABS codes as well! :D

what surprises me is that no one responded... the paper clip is my version of a code reader as well... cost=$0.01
