Tire noob

Okay, I know nothing about tires, nothing. I have a 2000 V8 non-sport. When looking up the tire sizes on tirerack.com, I get 215/60-16. Is this right? The reason im asking is that im looking to buy a set of rims from this guy with tires, their size is 225/45-17. I know the sport LS's came with 17's. Is this tire that different from stock? That link didnt work, it comes up blank. However, the V8 models all come with 17s mine are 235/50/17 but this is an 2nd gen, I dont know about the 1st gens.

I have a buddy with an 01 V8 and he has 16's. He's buying my stock 17's (from my '05) for summer tires and keeping his 16's for winters......

The stock size on all LSes with 17" wheels is 235/50-17, so those 225/45-17 are skinnier and shorter than stock; if you use them, your speedometer will read high (ie, you'll be going slower than the speedo shows). When your speedo reads 30mph, you'll be going ~29mph, but when your speedo shows 65mph, you'll be going ~62mph (but, given the general high speedo readings in the LS, that means you'll probably be going closer to 60mph)...

Will the ride quality be dramatically sacrificed? Im only looking at these because i need winter tires, and these are a great deal, Michelin Pilot Alpins. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Hey man... understanding tire sizes and rim offsets can be a daunting task and i was there so I know where you're coming from. SoonerLS is giving you good info... but you want to make sure of the offset and bolt pattern for these rims. The ride wont suffer too much but i would advise getting 235/50/17 tires when you replace them.

The 2004 V8 are 17”, the V6 are 16”. In 2002 the V6 and V8 auto are 16” and the V6 manual is 17”. The 2005 V6 are 16”, V8 are 17”, and the 2006 were all V8 and 17”. Not sure about 2000, 2001 and 2003.

Not quite. My '06 V8 came with 16" wheels--it was a special "cold weather" package that came with the non-Sport suspension and 16" wheels to accommodate snow chains.

How in the heck a dealer in Lawton, OK, ended up with one of those, I have no idea.

True; I thought about that, but after I'd posted the message. FWIW, the bolt pattern is 5x108mm (1x4.25"), and the stock offset is 60mm.

My information came from the sales brochure for those years.

2006 with 16” must have been clearing out the parts bin.

Get Winterforce
They kick some serious butt in the snow. I've had them on 2 of my cars and never got stuck when they were on. And we have plenty of hills around here to get stuck on.

I would get new tires, but i'm buying them on the rims, and the tires are almost new.

Stock tires

If I'm not mistaken, there will be a driver door sticker in the door jamb that tells you the correct size of tires for your vehicle and inflation pressure. The vehicle was designed to use those specific tires. If you change to a different size you may not get the ride you expect.
