I'm going to get my transmission flushed today b/c of the grooved-road sound in the tranny. I've been told that this is a temporary solution and what I need is a new torque converter. If that's true, how much money am I looking at in labor to fix this?

The Flush will not solve the problem.. I tried this then a month later changed the Torque Conveter..

Stock Torq is about $150 to $180 - You have to drop the exhaust, and remove the tranny so a shop will charge $800 to $1000 to drop the tranny.

You can do it yourself it is not a terrible job.. Takes time lots of things to remove..

Then it only cost you the price of the Torq and the fluid.

It really worked no BS.

I used to get shudder from my newly installed 98 tranny, then yesterday with my $15 dealership oil + filter chainge, I asked them to bleed 1 quart of Mercon from the tranny and add a bottle of Lucas tranny in there (I brought the bottle of Lucas). They did this free of charge and I immediatly noticed improved vibration from under my seat, and I haven't shuddred once yet, although its only been 24 hours or so, but I did do a lot of driving.

$8 for a bottle of Lucas might as well be free if your problem is solved by it. Good luck.

i had the shudder and a vibration, the lincoln dealer said they wanted to change the converter for a grand. so i then i canged the filter and drained the torque converter and put mercon V in and problem went away, i think most people dont think of draining the torque converter.

if your mark viii does not have mercon v and it is shuddering, absolutely CHANGE to mercon v
mercon v contains friction modifiers that eliminate the shudder,
transmission shops also use lubegard to do this,it converts mercon iii to mercon v,about $8-$12 bottle will convert entire transmission capacity to v,one bottle is all you need,if shudder exist after v.you have other probs.
