torque converter installation

How many hours would this take to install. Is their any tech articles, any kind of information i can get on what exactly i need to do. On 1-10 id say im a 6-7 on mechanical ability.. How many hours can i expect to spend doing this.. and will floor jacks and jack stands be good enough? i have ramps but the bumper seems to be too low to drive up them.. I would also like to do a shift kit also..
 
for starters, youll have to pull the driveshaft, i have heard you can do that w.o removing the tank, but havent tried it myself.

Then youll have the bell housing bolts, shift linkage, wiring harness, etc.

Id bet it will take you over 5 hours.
 
It took me about 4 hours to pull my torque this summer. You don't have to completely drop the gas tank but you do have to drop the exhuast.

I ran into only one pisser bolt on the starter that gave me some trouble.

Get yourself a lot of exstentions and a wiggle bee -

Make sure you spary all your bolts down before hand at least a day.

Have Rays phone number handy! Just in case.. (Most important instruction)

I did mine on my back with the car only on ramps and Jack stands. Just don't go to Autozone! or it will take you more days as they will give you the wrong parts.

Ray would be me......I have pulled the tranny on my car at least 5 times and I am more than willing to help anyway I can.

Ok, I freely admit this subject is beyond my knowledge, but...I was told that you have to rebuild the tranny in order to replace the TQ.

Is that true?

I would never put in a t/c without freshening up the transmission (or vice-versa). You can stir up a lot of garbage that will float around and clog up passages and other assorted nastiness. Make sure you blow out all the lines and transmission cooler if applicable. Remember, if your tranny dies, it will take your new converter with it 95% of the time, and if you lose a t/c, your tranny will likely be pushing up daises as well.

If you are dead-set on leaving the old tranny untouched, at least change out the fluid and filter. Dirt will destroy a tranny in short order.
 
I'm about to do a tranny swap, probably along with a new TC. If I get a used transmission, what other parts and stuff should I order in advance?

Also, what size TC is best? And what is resulting difference in ride quality related to stall speed.
 
When I did my Torque I also stopped at a local tranny place - very reputable place. They also offered some advice and did not feel I needed to anything more with my tranny (and no these are not the kind of guys who were rubbing their hands waiting for me to f-ck up).

Then I had just resently had my Tranny Flushed.

I have an Edge 9" (2800 stall, medium/high STR) behind the LT1 in my Caprice, an excellant piece. When you factor price in, I would say it is the best t/c per dollar on the planet, and it is not even close.

Yeah, I had the same experience. I had my tranny flushed 15,000 miles ago, and I've had no trouble since.
