Trac Loc?

Ok everyone I have a question... I'm still sorta new to the LS world(only have had mine for a year) but today the roads are a bit wet out in the AZ and I decided to screw with the wife who was in the new Challenger R/T knowing that I would get smoked but still wanting to have fun I egged her on to race. I put my 06 LS into SST mode and took off. Of course I spun the tires due to the wet pavement but when I shifted up to second the rear got squirrely on me like it was a limited slip rear-end. My question is did the LS get a trac loc rear or is that just the nature of the car in these conditions?
 
No LS ever came with a locking rear end (it can be added). However, all LSes came with either electronic traction control or AdvanceTrac. Traction control applies the brakes to whichever rear wheel starts to spin. AdvanceTrac uses all four brakes, a yaw sensor, and a steering wheel angle sensor to try and keep the car going in the direction that you are steering it in.

If you have a spinning tire symbol on the instrument cluster that sometimes flashes, you have traction control only. If the symbol is a car with wavy lines below it, you have AdvanceTrac. Either can be turned off by the button in the center console. You might read your owner's manual as see what other features you have that you don't know about.
 
I know as a fact I have Advance Trac. It was just strange to have that feeling in a car that doesn't have a limited slip rear-end. So it can added? Another question what rear gear ratio do most LS's have?

There is quite a bit of info and some treads on this subject. You should search them out and read up on all the details, but ... here is the short and sweet version.

For a Gen II LS you have two options. You can either buy a fairly expensive Quiafe LSD that the Jaguar S-type folks sourced or you can back date the differential and axles to a Gen I LS pieces/parts and use the 28-spline Ford 8.8" LSD of your liking.

If you decide on the second option, the 28-spline Ford 8.8" IRS LSD will bolt directly into the Gen I differential housing. The 8" ring gear in the Gen I differential is basically a cut down 8.8" unit. The Gen II V8 cars have a 3.58 (Sport) gear standard, while 98% of the Gen I V8 had a 3.31 gear. Some very early Gen I V8 Sport models had the 3.58 gear. Luckily the Gen I V6 cars had a 3.58 gear. If you find a good condition low mileage Gen I V6 differential, you may not have to touch the pinion, making the swap much easier. You need the Gen I axles because the width of the Gen I and II differentials are different. Everything bolts in.

For my Gen II V8 LSD conversion a bought a very low mileage Gen I V6 differential, a Eaton TrueTrac LSD for the 28-spline Ford 8.8 IRS, an partial installation kit (not touching the pinion), a case spreader tool for the Ford aluminum 8.8 IRS differential to get the correct bearing pre-load and a pair of re-manufactured Gen I axles. If you have a trany/differential shop do the swap, you will not need to buy the case spreader tool.

I ran out of time this Fall, so I will get around to doing the swap this coming Spring.
 
Good deal! Thanks everyone for the info. I did not really expect the out poring of information and was going to use the search when I got home to my laptop. Overall I've got to say the longer I have my LS the more I'm liking it over my Mark!

I know! Thank God I dont get on that side of the forum anymore. lol I still love my Mark VIII for what it was. I still miss it enough Ive left my signature at the bottom of my posts as the pic of my Mark.
 
They have to have some sort of clutched traction-loc (ford's terminology) dont they?
My car never spins just 1 tire, if i hammer it, it lights up both rear tires with the Advance-Trac off. Power braking also leads to two black marks on the pavement.
It's hard to see Ford Installing an Open-end rear, in a $40k+ car that was meant to compete with BMW's and other high end sport sedans. (although dumber things have been done by ford)

I am not saying u are wrong at all, but my car history shows it being a corporate car in detroit at one time, (didnt say what corp) so i cant see a Trac-Loc having been installed by the PO, An open end rear doesnt explain my lack of one-wheeled wonderness.
 
If you twist the steering wheel just right when you floor it, you can break one wheel loose. Otherwise, put really bad tires on it or put some sacks of cement on one side of the trunk. The LS is a pretty well balanced car, with more weight over the rear wheels than most cars. The differential is open.

BTW, AFAIK the BMW 5 series (the car the LS was to compete with) also only comes from the factory with an open differential. I think you have to get one of the M cars to get an LSD from BMW.

Looking back Im going to have to agree with the LS being a pretty well balanced car. The only time Ive ever got it to come loose was yesterday with screwing around in the rain( if you want to call it that here in Phoenix. Watch The Super Bowl today and you will get to judge for yourself. lol).
 
It's been my experience the LS has 2 Personalities. I've had the one wheel spin happen when driving it easy around corners. However, when driven aggressively, I can go around the same corner without the wheel spinning. Then again, I trail brake so, I wouldn't be a good example.

also I bet I can change all eight of mine, drink a 6 pack, and watch a whole game in the same time that it would take you to change those 6! haha

One thing I do know for sure......my 2004 V-6 LS has no traction-lok axle(surprised me!),but just a regular set of gears with spider gears like in the olden days.LOL! don-ohio :)^)
 
It turns on by default each time you start the car, unless a fault is detected.
