04V6 with 7800 miles, auto tranny.

Tonight while backing out of a driveway I stopped at the end of the drive to look for on coming trafic. When I tried to continue backing up I noticed the engine rev-ing, also noticed the gear shift not quite in Reverse. I thought that I didn't have it in reverse propery to begin with and It must have popped into Park. No big deal I thought, so I put the car in Reverse and continued to back out no problem. Now driving down the street I noticed that it shifted hard into 3rd gear. During my 5 mile drive home the hard shift into 3rd gear happened consistently. I decided to pull over, turn the car off and after a while started it back up. I took it for a long test drive, with lots of starts from the stop position cycling through all the speeds. The hard shift into 3rd did NOT occur. The tranny shifted smoothly.

This is the first time experiencing any type of tranny issue with this car. The dealer performed the tranny recall last week, they added a fluid addative to the existing tranny fluid.

Question: Do you think the computer controlling the tranny got confused when it slipped out of reverse? By turing the car off and then on do you think it reset the system?

As always, thanks for your input.

well my grandfather has a theory about fresh power, turning off and back on, and how it can fix things. The transmission in these cars is the most unpredictable component IMHO. I have never owned a vehicle with tranny problems like this has.

How many miles did you have on your LS before they did the recall work? It very well could be that the reset did help and you could have a component on its way out as a result of the fluid issue. It has been my experince that the problem at first is fleeting but then it begins to recur more frequently.

I would log when and what it does just so you can have written historical record just in case you have to go in for tranny work.

I just had the tranny recall done last week at ~ 7500 miles.

This morning I drove to work with out any problems, tranny shifted fine.

I think I will call the dealer and have them enter it in their system.

These car companys have been making auto trannys for a long long time now, can't they get it right? I think it's too much computer control...just venting now.
Do't you think that they can make an auto-tranny that works

Well what shocks me is that they reuse many parts and should come to know they will perform. in the case of the LS transmission i am appauled to hear that after nearly 6 years of production and testing that some of the same issues are recurring.

To answer your question; yes they absolutely should have this thing licked by now. I have owned many other cars not in the class of this one and each of them served me well. Nissan, honda and toyotas all of them I had well over 300k miles and the only problem I had with them is that they would die.

Had no problems with the tranny on the drive home tonight. Shifted great through out my 30 mile commute...I'm hoping it just got confussed when it it wasn't in reverse properly

My hopes are with you! I would not wish what I have been through with mine on any person.

what have you gone through with your tranny? what engine?

Tranny. I am on my 4th solenoid pack and my 2nd valve body. Engine. I have endured spontaneous shutdowns on the highway and in the city, valve covers twice. It has been one nutty ride.

I have realistic expectations; I am not some nut that expects perfect operation. As a software developer I understand that nothing on earth is forged in perfection. This car of mine has exceeded what I would expect to be average and customary MTBF for some systems. The recidivistic nature of some systems, tranny for example, cast great shame either on the parts supplier, the assemblers or the design team, hell all of them.

No problem this morning driving to work, the tranny shifted as if nothing ever happened the other night. Keeping my fingers crossed.

It's been one week and I haven't had a 2nd occurence of the tranny burp. Keeping my fingers crossed that the computer got confused when it popped out of reverse on me (my fault for not having it fully in R)
