I'm thoroughly confused.
I just keep encountering too much contradictory information.
My transmission is shot. It's a 1993 Mark VIII with about 185k miles on it.

I read the message boards and I learn of dozens of trouble free transmission swaps into the Mark VIII. But, everytime I speak with a Ford tech, they tell me that it's a bad idea and that there are compatibilty problems.

They say putting a transmission from a different model or year vehicle risks problems with the computer, fluid pressure, and gear ratio. Then that it's better to just fix the original '93 unit.

If I buy a transmission from a '97 Gran Marquis (found one for $250, 10k mi), will it be a direct, trouble free fit? Has anyone ever run into complications due to these swaps.

My understanding is the following-
Any Crown Vic (non-cop), Mustang GT, Grand Marquis, Mark VIII, through '97 will be a perfect match in my Mark VIII. Even the electrical harness will fit perfectly.

Can those of you who have transplanted a transmission tell me if it was successful, what it was from, or what problems that resulted. I'm absolutely frozen at this point.

This 8k mile unit has been sitting on the shelf since 1999.
Should I avoid it?

Transmission Physician 813.835.8728. They are located in south tampa, on dale mabry. If you have the time to take your trans up here, they will do an excellent job. You will not be disappointed.

Are you looking to do the work yourself? I am sure you will get a lot of post in the next day or so to help but if not, go find a tranny guy who you really trust. Someone who doesn't just want the job. I have a guy here by me I could ask for you if you like. He's someone I'd trust for information.

I wouldn't trust a dealership for straight do it yourself answers.

I dont know the specifics about the diffrent trans's, but i do believe that the panther platform's transmissions are also the same as ours. Also, dont be affraid of diffrent years. Hes just trying to get you to take the junk 93 to him so he can rip you off. Transmissions are very scarry territory if you dont know whats going on, and you can get bs'd into paying much much more than you need. IMO, get a 98 or newer. I think they still use our trans in the cv's and like. If your gonna get just a stock replacement, not modded or anything, and its new...dont spend more than like 12-1300. (btw...im on my third :) )
