Should I try to rebuild the trans myself, Anyone know where to get a manual for this task and any advice?

It's not broke yet, but I just don't want to pay 2000$+ to fix it if I can rent a car for a week for a few hundred and rebuild mine for a few hundred, I'll do it. I also want to make any and all modifications to the transmission to strengthen it and allow it to handle more power, that I will hopefully one day add to the motor.

I read here montancrm has 300+ hp and tq, I'd love to have even more than that but on FWD I have heard that much power is problematic.

I also want to get exhaust done, there is a shop near me that will do custom work for a decent price, and I was thinking about that to get some of the gains spoken of by montanacrm.

Automatic transmission rebuild is not something most full time mechanics even like to touch. If you want to save some money pulling it yourself might be practical, but open it up at your peril.

When the time comes I will be rebuilding my own tranny. I am not scared of a few small nuts and bolts. The biggest problem will be getting replacement parts. Your lincoln tranny has already been beefed at the factory.

Beefed?

I thought they were the same as the Taurus trannys except for the bell housing, and I thought there were a few things that could be done to strengthen it that weren't done at the factory... some valve that could be larger or something...

Nuts and bolts don't scare me, but springs and ball bearings, and the need for an exceptionally clean final assembly with maybe a couple weeks in the middle waiting on parts might make me pause.

A good way to judge a DIY project is to look for some threads of other people doing the same thing successfully. Let me know if you ever find one for amateur automatic transmission repair.

Rebuilding a trans is not a simple task...

The biggest problem with a diy rebuild is you will need specialized tools that will have large costs... also if you get it wrong you could end up spending as much money doing a second or third retry... not to mention the aggravation involved.

Yeah that's what I've been reading, and I think Jasper makes a nice one for $2000, and I have a few shops that I have good relationships with to install it. It ain't broke so I ain't gonna fix it...
