Well last night transmission went out. I just have 1st and 2nd gear. I kinda new it was coming. So my question is will my 2005 Lincoln LS 3.9 transmission be compatible with other years. I think I can get one at the junk yard for $400.00 from a 2003. Second question is it a difficulty task to do yourself. I'm not a master mechanic, but have I done a couple on Jeep cherokes and buick regals.....Third question, Is it worth the repair? The Motor still runs pretty strong, leaking from the valve cover as usual. The body and interior are still kinda clean. Thanks for your time ..........Merry Christmas....................

First off I'll just say, that even in pristine condition... your car holds very small value. Basically so small, that financially it would be obsolete to invest in it in any way whatsoever.

Any repairs or maintenance you put into the LS, you do out of love. If you love the car, fix it. If not, don't waste the time or money. You'll never get your money back on this car. Your payment comes from the professional look while behind the wheel. The subtle quiet Jag 4.0, that roars when you want it to. The American sedan that's still got a set of balls. And that classy image that no other manufacturer has been able to achieve.

Yes, the '03 trans will swap into your '05. The '00-'02 will not. At least I'm quite certain on this.

Oh and if you're capable of transmission swaps, then your valve covers shouldn't be leaking. That's a quick way to ruin coils and plugs. They cost you half a grand each time. Fix your valve cover gaskets mate !!!

Get a remanufactured transmission for ~$1600 from RockAuto if you are going to do it. It will cover all of the weaknesses of the stock design and most likely outlive the remainder of the car. A used one is too much of a gamble for the amount of effort to swap it. It is not an easy task if you are not sure what you are getting into, either.

OP: what is the symptom when it tries to shift to 3? what does it do?

Alternatively, Tasca has what looks to be a NEW transmission for 2400 plus a 1000 core. You'd need to check with them to see if it's a new or rebuilt. Comes with a factory warranty so if it is a rebuild it'll be a Ford rebuild. No idea on the Rock Auto one aside from my usual warning about making sure that the part you order is the part you get. I've had them send me their bargain brand junk parts in premium branded boxes before.

Light up the rears while traveling in reverse, then jam it in drive and stomp on it? :shifty: That aught to do it.
My old Z28, manual 5 speed, used to get a beatin like that from time to time, drive through the tire stink,
mostly on Friday and Saturday nights if I recall correctly.

^ Ya think, Captain Obvious?

Honestly, how would you even take something like that seriously!

From some of the things I've read on here.......

IIRC, one of the jobs Mark K. had was to try and break the trans driving the PCH in the Carpenteria to Big Sur area in lower gears.

Hang over????? :p :p :p

RockAuto is selling ETE reman transmissions. They are very good, with excellent warranty and great customer service (from my experience). They will verify the proper transmission if you provide your VIN number. I personally would take a remanufactured 5R transmission over a new one, as the "new" one will still have all of the inherit weaknesses of the original design. The remanufacturers, at least good ones like ETE, address all of the weak points and known issues which leaves you with a "better-than-new" transmission for less cost.

Just stops moving.....Presss on the gas and stops going till I shift back to second.....But a buddy is going to rebuild it............

BigRigLS ........Hilarious..........Really just reved it to 7000 RPMS in neutral and jammed into drive to see if it would throw me back in my seat..........Haha...............
