Before I resort to pulling and replacing the trans, I thought I should ask if there are any simple causes for the tranny to not shift into 3rd or 4th. Shifts from 1-2 OK, but once the speed is high enough to shift to 3rd, the tranny disengages and the motor is freewheeling until it is shifted back to 2nd or the car speed slows down enough to fall back into 2nd gear. Anything I can do to test / check it without pulling the whole transmission?

Agreed. OWC (One-Way Clutch) is fried.

Either you were doing a bunch of 4-2 downshifts or 1-2 power upshifts or just changed the tranny fluid in the last 500 miles.

Damn, I was hoping it was the neutral position sensor or something simple. I just bought the car with this trans problem. The car only has 58,000 miles on it. I have a used trans coming, what should I do to the used trans before installation besides the obvious flush and refill?

4.5 hours with two guys on a lift, 5 hours in the drive way. If you have done allot before. First one took me a week

Do a BE controls (http://www.becontrols.com/products/products.htm) shift kit with new upgraded accumulators from Maxx at 5 star-------------->
Plus mercon 5 or Ams oil flush and a 26,000 lbs bar type transmission cooler (don't get the fin kind)

I would also recommend an in-line filter, and if you have the cash a good stall converter.

all that above except the stall is less then 200.

I think there is also a solenoid in the Trans but I for got what it’s called or where it’s at, I have always had a local shop go into my transmissions. I just R&R them.

Do you have a link to the upgraded accumulators and / or Maxx at 5-star? Do I really need the BE shift kit? What advantage does it have over the stock setup? I want greater reliability without having to dig too deep into my pocket right now. Also, where is the bast place to get the trans cooler? Thanks.

I have this same problem that started today. Could this be caused by an aftermarket chip with shifts set to firmer than stock ? Ive always had a hard 1,2 shift with the chip.

the one way clutch mentioned is a known 4r70w weak point..
you can always hope for an easy fix, but i would start hunting for a trans.. :(

Yup... Start looking for a donor transmission. I had this happen to mine a few months back.

I grabbed a 2000 Mustang trans. A 99+ mustang transmission will screw up your speedometer though.

55 on clock with a messed up tranny i highly doubt it.d.id u run a carfax to check that the mileage is accurate?
