Is there anyway to "tighten up" the shift sequence on a 2006 LS V8? I would like to take some of the sloppiness out of the shift range.

Get a custom tune and an sct tuner. The tuner normally also tune the transmission to make it more responsive

You can also do a valve-body shift kit. I believe TransGo makes it.

I got the TransGo kit, will make a thread on it Real Soon Now(tm). It's not a DIY. Only about half of the parts can be installed with the tranny in the car. They also modify the pump. Main goal is to reduce problems with the tranny, not reprogram it.
I'm hanging onto it until mine breaks (150k miles, can't have much left!) and ask the shop to install it as part of the rebuild.

My dad asked once if you could get a shift kit for the ls since he would do it to his cars way back. He was told no, that you couldn't do it to these cars.

Good to know oddball

What does a shift kit do? My dad said when he did it to his 69 camero, I believe, it made it shift more firm.

I used the SCT XCal, firmed up the shifts (increased shift pressure) and changed some of the shift points since my torque curve is different than stock.

Usually, they futz with the springs, check balls and bleed holes in the valve body. This changes the pressures that do the shifting. Auto trannies are very complicated, so things like changing a "soft" spring for a "hard" spring (difference can be very minor) can completely change a shift.
The normal goal is to make shifts more firm, with a varying degree of firmness to "slightly firmer" to "broke the axle". Some kits include "fixes" to help avoid common problems. Some kits even do complete reprogramming, like making a tranny manual-only (no auto at all) or reverse shift pattern.

You have to remove the valvebody to get it in there.

Eh, that's normal. And easy. ATF is a good skin conditioner. The kit did not come with new valve body gaskets (warning sign) and several parts have to go into the pump. Not getting that out with the tranny in the car, but I encourage folks to try.
