Howdy,

Whats the difference between a 4.6 truck motor and a 4.6 car motor? Are the flywheels different? Engine controls radically different? What about transmission bolt patterns?
The basic idea is that I'm thinking 5.4L into a Town Car but truck are the onlythings with 5.4's and Ford is not stupid enough to make the differences between a 4.6 and a 5.4 significant enough to slow down the manufacturing and have to stock two seperate things. The computer of course knows that its a 5.4 not a 4.6 but whatelse did they change between?
What about the 6.8 V10? does it share the same transmission bolt pattern or is it just a bad idea to subject the stock Town Car transmission to V10 torque?

Thanks,

All RWD Modulars have the same transmission bolt pattern. So it is possible to drop a 4R70W from a 99 TC into a 2004 Explorer, etc. You may have to do some minor wire work between years.

The 6.8 utilizes the 4R100 transmission, which will bolt onto a 4.6 with minor mods. I wouldn't swap a V10 and use a 4R70W- the 476 ft. of torque might just rip it in half, but don't quote me on that :D .

A guy in a Crown Vic dropped a V10/ 4R100 setup in his with some minor modification of the tranny hump, some intake work, and moving the motor mounts: Article

The flywheels on Ford trucks built in Windsor are 8-bolt as opposed to the 6 bolt for our Romeo 4.6's.

A major problem with swapping the V10 into a V8 car is getting the speedometer to work because of differences in computers. Also, the wiring is gonna be a beyotch if you go V10: you need two extra cylinders/ injectors to run.

The 5.4 would be theoretically "easier" than the 6.8 swap, but you may want to review clearance issues and power gained vs. total cost and aggravation, before considering an engine swap. The 5.4 is 2 inches wider (IIRC). Reichard Racing makes these adapter plates for the intake manifold. Bring you wallet. :D

An 80mm MAF and larger tube, electronic throttle control
A knock sensor
PS, tranny, oil coolers
HD suspension, HD electrical system

3:27 or 3:55 gears
