Trying to put 2nd Gen shifter in 1st GEN

I have a 94 Mark, and the button you press to shift from park broke on my shifter. After searching for months I could not find another button, so I followed the advice of some people on another forum and got a complete shift knob from a 2nd gen. I found out that didnt fit, then I thought I would just change the shift lever to make it fit. But the levers are different. So I found a guy locally who has a 2nd gen hes parting and I got a complete shifter from him. Has anyone swapped one over before? If so are the cables different? Or is there any special adaptation involved? Im hoping they kept the floor cut outs the same.

get another button from a focus or something from a junkyard.
or from someone on here.

The Focus has the same shifter button as the Mark?

i haven't personally tried it but that's what i've heard.
