I feel real stupid for asking this but my 2001 LS is the first nice car I've owed. HAd nothing but junky cars before so i never bothered with much more than an oil change...if that.

Now obvioulsy i want to take care of my LS. Here's the thing...I dont know what a tune up is, although i know i'm supposed to get it done on my car.

Can someone please explain what exacly a tuneup is and when i should get one. My LS just hit 74,000 and i think i heard it's alreday past due.

Any other tips on maintaining my car would also be appreciated.....THANKS!!!!!

hey cable,

well essentially the only thing that can be done to this car in regards to the tune up is replace the plugs. There are no plug wires or distributor etc. However, it is a very time consuming process. If you are mechanically inclined it is something that you can do at home.

Have you noticed any misfires or smelled any smoke in the cockpit every once in a while? Also which engine do you have V6 or V8?

This is one heck of a car to learn how to do a tune-up on. :) I would strongly suggest replacing the plugs like El Es mentioned. Mine were tough to get out at 87,000 miles as the heads are aluminum. If you do it yourself, make sure the car is cold when you remove the plugs and go slow. Do not over-torque the new plugs when you install them and use a little anti-sieze compound on the threads.

The job is not that hard, but you need to be careful with those aluminum heads. If you find oil on your coils and plugs, you could always use the links in my signature to see what you are in for. :) OH...this is assuming a V8 car. The V6 is a different process.
