Unusual breakage

Found this under the car. Don't know how it broke, but it's fixed now.

good thing you caught it before something else did, and ripped our the wires for the catalyst sensors.
 
The only thing that gave it away was a line in the snow in my driveway. I thought that was odd and took it to the dealer and ran it up on the lift. It very easily could have turned into a much more expensive repair. The black shield that broke is no longer available(obsolete) so we used the old one and some electrical tape and zip ties.
 
Never realized how much space the pan on the automatic takes up. No that it matters, just saying.
 
I wonder if maybe a piece of tire debris in the road got popped up there and did that.
 
The only thing I can think of is maybe a chunk of snow or ice hit it. I don't really drive it that much.
