Dont get me wrong. Sooner or later I am going with the Kenwood DDX7017 or 8017. MOst likely wont change the amps or add subs due to needing all of my trunk space. Just wondering if upgrading the speakers would give me much more sound quality. www.crutchfield.com has a nice filter where you can put your year, model and sound system in and it spits out what fits in each speaker location. Also when I do upgrade the head unit am I going to lose any quality? Dont know about the DSP and such. Thanks guys and happy holidays!! BTW if any of you play poker I am SnoopWood on Pokerstars!:p

PS according to crutchfield

you can fit 6 1/2 components... i have two pairs of boston pro 60's

Thanks Josh. Not really worried about what will fit. Mainly want to know if there is bang for buck without upgrading the rest of the system. Personally I think the LS has one of the better sounding systems from the factory out there.

Wondering the same thing, I mean its nice but my '03 cavalier coupe was pretty close to the LS, LS w/ some better quality though.

I've wondered the same thing. I would like up upgrade my stock stereo but dont have the cash right now. So I've wondered if just upgrading the speakers would make a nice difference.....or is it not worth it with the stock stereo?

I have upgraded the speakers in my '05 Ultimate. And they sound GREAT now. I got factory confirmation that the door and center console speakers are 4 ohms and the sub-woofers in the rear deck are 2 ohm. I went with 4 Infinity 6x8s from Circuit City for the doors. I get so many unsolicited complements on the system now its funny.

Good luck,
Ed

This is a timely topic for me, since I've recently noted a buzz in the front passenger side speaker. Any specific recommendations as to what would be good 6x8 upgrades? I have a 00 Sport, factory stereo with the glove box changer. (I assume they'll plug right in?) I've got a Best Buy Gift Card burning a hole in my pocket!!
THANKS!

After a little research, it appears that speakers are either 6" round or 6 x9. Will 6x9's fit?

I have 6x8 Infinity reference components in my front doors and 6x8 Infinity Kappas with separates in my rear doors powered by a 4x55 watts Alpine V12 amp. They sound great. I recomment the Infinity speakers to everybody, the 6x8s fit perfectly and sound very nice and clear.

Here is a picture of the tweeter that I installed in the front door that comes with the separates. And a picture of the amp that powers the 4 doors.

OK...but I would like to ONLY upgrade the speakers and dont currently have a system with an amp.
Would this make enough difference?

Yep Cableguynoe,

Just changing the speakers in the doors made a big difference. You need to go with the Infinity Reference Series like I did. The Kappas are great, but they are only a 2 ohm load, this will overheat your amplifier. The Reference Series will be fine....you'll even hear bells clearly for the first time. ~$220 for 4 replacement speakers in the doors, and its a whole new system.

Good luck,
Ed

Does the 6 1/2 components fit without any custom work done??? Or would it be better off to just go with the 5 1/4???

I have the Kappas in my doors. While they sounded decent being powered by the HU, I ended up buying an aftermarket HU mainly to plug my IPOD into. Now they sound better, but I got bored and ended up buying an Audiobahn amp for them which I'm getting installed soon. I also bought a pair of Alpine Type R's from Crutchfield and tried them in the front doors. They sounded amazing, but the magnet was too big and the windows kept rubbing against it when I rolled them down. So I'm going to end up putting them into the rear deck once the wife calms down from me blowing all this money on my car. The Kappas are a good speaker, but it seems they need some decent power in order for them to really sound good. I've never heard the Reference Series, but you can't go wrong with Infinity speakers.

in my opinion i would go with the 6.5 infinity reference speakers they are 200 dollars each on crutchfield but u can get them on ebay for around 90 each. So i would recommend getting 2 sets of those and get an amp off ebay cheap aswell. You can get those components with an amp for about 300 off ebay, thats what i did and its a good deal.

Griff..... What size Alpine type R's did you have in the doors? I am considering the SPR-57LS (5x7 component set) and was worried about that huge magnet they have out back being a problem. Did you go with the 5x7's or did you have another size in there? Were you still able to roll the window all the way down? Maybe they would work with some slight modification. Let me know what's up.

thanks

N8,
I got the SPR-57LP 5x7's. The window went all the way down and up, you could just hear it scraping against the magnet when it hit the bottom. At the time Crutchfield was running a special on them, so I got them for $70. They sounded really good since they don't require much wattage and ran fine off the HU. I'm sure with a little manuevering, you could probably get them not to hit the window. I'm not all that technically sound so to speak, so I just kind of threw them in there.

Thanks Griff. First things first though, I will have to get the door panel off to see exactly what kind of space I have to work with.
I do plan to put a component set in the front and may put one in the rear too, havent decided. I dont have the "subs" in the rear deck so I might just put some good 6x9's up there and leave the rear doors on the deck power.
I am an Alpine FANatic

In my opinion.....dont know if it will fit or work with this car because i havent put my system in my new ls yet but in my old car it was suppost to have 6.5 in the front and 6x9 in the back. I ended up putting 2 6.5 component systems in and not dealing with 6x9 in order to get the clearest sound possible. This ended up working perfectly for me because i have subs to make base so i consider 6x9s useless. This is what i would recommend but i dont know if 6.5 would fit well in the space for the 6x9s in the ls.

Factory subs... Replacement ideas?

I just spent the past weekend tearing into the factory system on my '00 LS.(Alpine with 6-disc in dash) Found out the rear deck speakers (5X7) are subs. They even have their own enclosure! My question is has anybody replaced these with maybe 8" subs or something else?

I've heard of people replacing them with both 6x9's as well as 5x7's. From what people say on here, they're really not decent subs. I'm hoping to replace them with the Alpine's I mentioned in my earlier post.
