All the V6 sticks came with 3.07 rear ratios...I want to change mine to the 3.58's that's in all automatics, 6's and *'s... but don't know if the axle shafts interchange etc...anyone know.
thanks Don

They should but, you may need to get a new spedo gear and also need a tune so the computer is getting the right info. Not sure if this is as important on a mtx as an auto but don't want you to run into trouble. But why would you need to change the axle shafts to change the gear ratio in the diff?

V6s came with different size shafts, according to the shop manual. You would think the 5 spd would have the bigger shafts though.

Wow thats wierd well everything european is usually more complicated on cars. On my towncar it would have just been swapping the gears had i not also added a beefed up limited slip to the diff. I know this is a irs but thought the atx and mtx would both have the same shafts. As on my 91 tbird which was irs despite several shops which refused to believe or align the rear end, so i had to keep looking but anyways. The rear on that was overly braced/engineered for the hp the bird put out according to the shop replacing the dried out pressed in seal on the rear of it.

i had the same question, i work at a dealer and the mechanics all think it will work. i will give the car a little more hustle off the line, and mines been whining for a while now.

the V6s autos came with 3.58, manuals with 3.07, but the V8s (except the early 2000s and passed 2003s) came with 3.31 gear.

What the concern is for is spline counts (size) that fit into the side gears of the diff. One thing that is very possible is using your side gears out of your original diff if in fact they are different. But you would also need to make sure the seal and bearing surface is the same diameter. I'll tell you one way to find out. Look up the axle seals for each application. If they are a different part number, go to the buyer's guide and look at the dimensions of each seal. You may have to go to an aftermarket seal (Chicago Rawhide for example) to get enough information. The axle bearings in the diff housing should tell you the same information.

sorry I didn't follow up since April...there was a TSB on the half shafts...whines...the replacement part (larger diameter half shaft) is the same for either V8 or V6 and mine has the new replacement shafts. I've purchased a 3.58 diff and intend to install in the spring. I'll update you when I do.
