I've got the well documented leak problem and need to change the valve cover gasket on my '00 LS. Talked to a Lincoln tech and he indicated the gasket will leak again eventually, (maybe 60K miles, or maybe sooner) once it becomes swollen with oil.

I searched but could not find this particluar question...

Has anybody attempted to correct this problem by sealing the plug wells with some kind of sealant (like gasket maker)?

subj

Listen, i'm having the same problem with my 00' v6 Ls. If you can figure this problem out I think it would do justice to many other people who own one of these. So if anybody has this figured out, please for the love of my bank account, get something up that will let me know how to fix the problem. currently my emissions light is on intermitedly (amber light that looks like an engine) and the car is jerky when i accelerate at around the 40-60 mph range. Also as an after thought, I hear a clicking or knocking sound around the rear axle possibly from the exhaust after i drive the car for any extened period of time. Please let me know if anybody can give me a hand with possible do it yourself repairs, or can tell me what the issue might me , in order to tell the mechanics what to check out and fix, because apparently this problem seems to be an enigma to mechanics from the other write ups I've read on other sites. So please help me out. Im on this site every day recently because i'm really trying to get this fixed without putting it straight into the dealers hands blindly, so feel free to personal message me or give me a call (201) 450-2342. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

yes for the love of my bank account we really need some durable VCG kit's available.

blackball- it sounds like your car is misfiring, if you don't have the ability to change spark plugs and ignition coils yourself, you should take it to the dealer. Tell them to diagnose it and call you once they figure out what needs to be done and ask you what you want done. Basically tell them to take there "valve induction cleaner" ($200) and shove it unless its a large concern. Then tell them to install a new valve cover gasket kit and all the ignition coils on whatever side the failing coil is on. Also fif you are on stock plugs you might as well replace htem too. Thats the only way to be sure you wont get a misfire a week later.

East Coast, sounds like a good idea. I definitally wanna take a crack at it myself and probabally take it into the shop to atleast diagnose the problem for sure. Im not very good at engine work but I think that It sounds simple enough ( given I have the right tools parts and diagrams and instructions). With that said, does any body know where I can gather the bundle of goodies required for a Valve Cover Gasket/ spark Plug replacement? anybody?

I believe the updated gaskets are actually the black ones opposed to grey. I just replaced my vcg and all 8 coils over the weekend, Lincoln had replaced my vcg and coil #4 for me a few yrs ago, i was surprised to find the updated gasket already there, regardless there was signs of leakage all throughout my coil wells. replaced all and even sealed up around the plastic cover that goes over the top of the coils, if it ever happens again I declare war with ford.

blackball if you check under tech articles on this site there is plenty of info on parts required and even pictures on how to do it.

the right side is a bitch, def need a fuel line quick disconnect tool to get it done.

I got my colors wrong! I will be checking mine soon--it is misfiring a little now.

Wanted to bump this thread and ask my question again, as we are about to tear into this thing soon...

Has anybody attempted to correct this problem by sealing the plug wells with some kind of sealant (like gasket maker)?

correct - the redesigned ones (late 2002) are black. There design has a slightly different profile and made of a different rubber so they make a better seal and do not collapse from the heat over time. I have not heard of anyone who has upgraded to newer gaskets having the leaking problem again. These are modern rubber gaskets and do not 'swell' with oil over time.

Of course you can make it work by using enough gasket maker. I personally would not do this - once you have the cover off you'll see how the gasket fits into a grove on the underside of the cover.

I JUST finished replacing both gaskets yesterday and it was a pain!

Nothing too hard just time consuming because a lot of crap is in the way and the bolts in the back of the motor are hard to reach, only took me 4 hours though lol.

I used silicone all around the plastic cover, dont care what they say about the new and improved seal, I sealed it up nice and tight anyway. hope it never happens again.

When I do my gaskets I will check if some of the other known good brands like honda, toyota, etc. that I have laying around will fit the plug holes. I have never had a problem with a honda VC gasket even with motors up to 200K miles.

Quik - what is the part # for the updated VCG? (or a link would be helpful). and i assume it's best to get both left & right gaskets and swap them both at once....

I ordered the new gaskets about two weeks ago from Teamford to replace mines. I have them right here in front of me and here are the part numbers:
XW4Z-6584-BB AND XW4Z-6584-AB. Also this kit comes with the little gaskets that sits over the spark plug wells. They are $38.61 per side. Hope this helped you.

I just did the VCG's, coils & spark plug replacement on my 2000 LS... my new gaskets were black & I used info from the same link that QuickLS posted above http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/tec...Cover-Seal.htm
All went smooth... yes the right side is the bigger pain, but it is all worth it. Save those $$ if you don't mind pulling on a wrench or two.
