before i came here i ran across a reference question about an interior mystery item that i never found an answer to.

in between the sun visors on the overhead console in my 89 continental are 2 items
1)the moon roof switch
2)mystery port(?)

the port is rectangle 1" x 2 1/2" x 2 1/8" with the lincoln logo in the center and if you push open the spring loaded door and look in side it has a connection on the right side of the opening (kinda like the bottom of a cell phone charging pocket).

any one have any idea what this is for?

yea i always wondered the same thing.. i thought it was just for looks or to hide a key.. never looked into it

I did not think they had Homelink then. I have checked my manual on my 1994 and it never mentions it. It shows a picture of it in the manual but it does not say what it is for.

it was a garage door system that was made for lincoln by genie i believe, but might have been stanley.

thanks everyone i would never have guessed a garage door opener; that is one of the things most people don't think about today that was still not a common thing for everyone even in the 80's.

most of the people i knew then who had openers had key pad or key switches on the exterior of the garage to open the door - i guess it's not a real convenience if you still get out in the rain to open the door.

to me the optional opener thing seems more like a caddy oriented thing so this is an interesting surprise. i once saw and can't recall now what car company had this...a personal coffee brewer for 2 cups that plugged into the lighter that sat in the center console.

anyone know of any more gizmo options?

Out of all the Continental owners on this site, does anyone have this? I would love some pictures.

My 90 parts car has (had) an optional cell phone device of some sort.. I found the 3 watt transcevier in the trunk the other day. dont have the handset, but I found where it plugs in (on top of the hump in front of the front seat).
