I have a '93 Mark VIII. It's entirely possible that I have the original transmission still in it, with almost 185k miles on it.

The Torque Converter is shot. The front seals are leaking.
I've replaced the 1-2 accum. and the drain pan.

The first question is- do I just buy another used transmission and work on that, or should I remove my '93 tranny and upgrade that?

Second- what should I do.
New TC, shift kit, transmission cooler, and what else? What's available, what can be changed? What else can be improved upon?

Just scrap your car! Just playin. Im getting my trans rebuilt as we speak. You could take it somewhere to see what they can do. Or if you have a few extra bills laying around go for a 98' tranny.

It would be better to buy a newer transmission. At least a 98+, but the 99+ are better because the valvebodys were redesigned. You can get very strong used trannys for cheap. Then perform your upgrades and have fun!

What are the best upgrades to peform, and who makes them?

Shift kits sometimes differentiate performance vs. towing setups. If I occassionally tow, would performance shifts be damaging?

Which torque converter would be recommended?

Why dont cha talk to Geno, he did mine, and i couldnt be happier with it.

You could buy a used transmission from a '98 or later Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicle. It might come with a torque converter. The used Mustang 4R70W I purchased came with a torque converter.

What mods would have to be done with that particular one to fit on the Mark VIII?

You would have to re-pin the connector. Thats it.

If you want the instructions for it, let me know.

Just to clarify-

A 4r70w out of a '98-2000 Mustang GT should bolt right in, only modification it will need is to re-pin the connector?

What are the list of other parts that'll I'll want to pre-order from Max while I have the newer transmission out.

Should I replace the torque converter on a used unit with 80k miles on it? Should I get it with a 2400 stall?

And what shift kit do you guys recommend?

wow i didnt know you can put a 98+ tranny in a 93..i thought the guts where abit different
on my 98 my t/c cracked at the seam and sprung a leak right out the front gasket,so i changed to a protorque t/c,changed the pump, and seals..and im running really good.no more leaks (knockin wood)shifting is still great..really no complaints ;)

You'll need either to re-pin the connector, or take the wires from inside your old transmission and put them in your new one.

Here's the link for how to do it:

You absolutely must take the TCC solenoid from your old transmission, and put it in the new one. DO NOT try to use the later model TCC solenoid from the new transmission, or you'll damage your engine computer!

Finally, Mustang transmissions have a different number of grooves on their output shafts, than Mark VIIIs.
If you get a late model Mustang transmission, you'll need to install a 19 tooth speedometer gear (assuming you still have the stock 3:08 gears).
