Is there a DIY for an alternator replacement for the V8 LS? I need to know what size tools are used and any tips and tricks.

Any information is helpful.

Thanks!

here is the procedure - > http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showpost.php?p=29316&postcount=2

Getting the alternator turned properly so it will slide out of the opening takes a bit of work… just keep trying and use this picture to orientate the unit.

I believe all you need is a wrench and socket with a long extension (either 13mm or 15mm) to undo all three bolts.

you need to use a 3/8" breaker bar to release the tensioner pulley to get the belt slack.

u may need a long flathead to push the "sleeves" that the bolts are in, back/out of the way. I actually tried this job once, and had all three bolts removed..and the alternator would not budge. Actually drove it about 9 miles to the Ford dealership with no bolts..and it stayed in. lol. Mechanic said the "sleeve" (for lack of better word) needed to be pushed back a bit.

Also...I strongly recommend a Motorcraft or name brand alternator. those Palladium ones that AutoZone sells..are not worth the chance. Spotty quality control on those. Trust me.

Don't cheap out or you'll be doing this all over again in 6 months.

Also, if you dont want to do it yourself, you may want to ask PepBoys how much for labor. The second time I had mine replaced, Pep Boys charged me around $89 for replacement. (not including alternator). Far cheaper than the $279 or so labor at the Ford dealership..for doing the exact same thing.

When the alt on my '02 gave out, there were none available without a three day wait except at 'zone. I gave $200 and everything was fine for about three months. While at the head of the line in staging at Maxton the car quit and we found out that the problem was a dead battery---dead alternator. Pushed/towed the car back to the pits and went back to town for another alt. Had to put it on by flashlight back in the pits. That was a year ago. Everything's been OK for the last 20K miles. I intend to replace it when the new engine goes in.
