why are oil prices so high, again

Probably due to the turmoil and instability in the Middle East. Just a guess. Personally, OPEC uses any excuse to gouge us (the world) suckers.

I'm sure someone else will have a better and more precise explanation.

Better and precise? Like:

It's all George W. Bush's fault. :shifty:

World production has hit max capacity, and demand is skyrocketing because of the emergence of China and India as automotive markets and industrialized nations.

Biglou hit the nail on the head. They're doing to oil what they've done to other commodities. If someone farts in the middle east it causes the price to fluctuate. Capitalism at its best, wouldn't you say Calabrio?

If there was money to be made selling oil at $35 a barrel, and gas at $1.55 a gallon, SOMEONE would do it, because all of a sudden, they'd OWN the entire market.

And on the other hand (eat my shorts O'Reilly), if somebody lowered the price of oil to $35 a barrel in order to make life easier on the public but to their own detriment, all these speculators would buy up all the supply and then there would be a SHORTAGE! DUH!

Price gouging works! It keeps the supply available and prevents speculators from hurting the rest of us.

The gas suppliers can, so they are. They exist to maximize profits and they do so in any way possible. Crude oil prices are pure BS when it come to the price of gas as the refiners raise gas prices when they still have lower priced crude "in the pipeline". We are at the mercy of an international monopoly able to influence governments, laws, and promote military actions to ensure their profits.

If you can't beat 'em join 'em, get busy investing in these companies so they will be working to put money in your pockets.

Oh, by the way, you hit on another point...

Refineries in the US are running at peak capacity, they can't produce any more, and crackhead liberals won't allow us to build any more.

This has become a major problem in California where we use gas formulas specific to California and, as you say, God forbid any new refining capacity is added!

Is George Bush telling anyone how much he is making from the record prices of oil? I don't think so.

Why don't you tell us then?

Or better yet, why don't you go buy some big oil stock and get wealthy yourself? (DUH)

P.S. he's making millions, DuuuuuuuuuHHHHHH yourself.

You're telling me the President is making millions on oil?
Explain this. Explain his direct connection to oil. Maybe even tell us what companies he owns a share of. This would all be public information. Infact, his income taxes are made public annually too.

do you really think it's that simple????? he's in with the royal saudi family that his direct connection , his millions can't be traced. he's a CROOK. plain and simple. just like his vice president.

His timber company also is affilied with an oil company. So what does that say? Well here is my guess. with the way most homes and such are fabricated these days there is not much demand for timber as there was way back when most of the home were made out of good old fashioned wood. So the money has to be comming from somewhere right.

Good point. If we had a Federal fueling standard, it could substantially cut-down costs across the board.

Do you have any clue how wealthy people think? No offense, but obviously you aren't a wealthy person, otherwise you wouldn't be so ignorant on the subject.

Wealthy people aren't just out to hoard some more money, "ooh lookie here, I can make another million dollars, WHOOP-DE-DOO!!!" They're not like average folks, where another $10,000 per year would really change things. Adding another $50,000,000 to a person's net worth, when they're already worth $100,000,000, doesn't really matter to them. After the first few million, it gets old, and they tend to focus on other things, like supporting causes that they believe in, or helping specific people out. I should know, I'm on a first name basis with 5 millionaires, and two of my uncles (one uncle, one uncle-in-law) are pretty friggin' close to that mark themselves.

Great, let's support more needless regulation.

Perhaps you didn't notice, SUV sales are down. Hybrid sales are up. The market did this naturally without the heavy handed, expensive governmnet finding a way to screw it up.

The Californian fuel formulas are regulations. I'd rather one Federal standard than one from each of the "smog states".

I stand corrected. You are absolutely right. I misread that. I thought you were talking about increase the CAFE standards. A national fuel formula would be greatly benefitial and it would help eliminate the regional shortages that take place during disasters as well.
