Before the prices went up diesel was cheeper then regular but now costs more then premium just wonderin what the reasoning is behind that.

Used for heating oil , big trucks, supply and demand. People can park there cars but they need heating oil and the big trucks has to have fuel.

less people in the general public are buying it also, 15 years ago everone had a diesel pick up, plow truck, farm truck, they all had diesels cuz it was cheap, now after the costs of fuel went high, more and more of the public got rid of them, stopped buying diesel and gas lowered but diesel didnt, now truckers are hurting, food costs are through the roof for transporting this crap, so now people are starting to switch to trains. CSX railroad has a website to show how efficient their trains are, a gallon of fuel can get a stock car around the track twice, a gallon of fuel will get a passenger jet from gate 2 to gate 22, a gallon of fuel in a lawnmower will mow the average back yard, but 1 gallon of fuel in a CSX train will get it from baltimore to boston, 420 miles pulling a 1 ton load. thats insane. you would think diesel would cost so much less since it much less refined than gasoline.

What do you think tanks - and a bunch of other vehicles - run on over in Iraq. Much higher demand than when we aren't fighting a war. Still haven't found those WMD's yet...

I'm actually just guessing.

Part of the reason prices went up here was a required change in formulation to new low-sulfur formulations. The increase in demand for the construction booms in India and China didn't help, and the Chinese quietly buying up boatloads of it to make sure their generators could keep running during the Olympics played its part, as well. Add to that the run-up in the cost of crude oil and a demand level that never decreases (the trucks have to roll to deliver stuff year-'round), and you have expensive diesel.

As to why it's more expensive than gasoline, I think it's partly the change in formulation for diesel, partly the increase in global demand for diesel, and partly the decreased demand for gasoline (at least in the US).
