I'm looking at picking up some used winter tires locally, and a guy's got some that are 235/55/R17. Problem is, it shows up as a 3.5% difference in speed, and almost a full inch taller, will this be a clearance problem?

According to my back-of-the-envelope calculations, you're looking at a ~3mph difference at 80mph. At 40mph, it's just under 1.5mph difference. So, yeah, you should be OK.

Heck, your speedo will probably read correctly now... ;)

yeah no kidding... I just wanted to make sure that they won't rub all up in the fender well or on springs or something stupid like that.

You're not going any wider, just taller, so there shouldn't be any clearance issues. Given that people run wider tires on 20" wheels without rubbing, I'm reasonably certain that you'll be OK.

I don't think that they will rub, but what about the looks? The 55s are kind of too tall for a 17" wheel.

They're snow tires... crap, I was going to put on steelies off a Jaguar with winter tires on them, now THAT would have been ugly. I'm not worried about another 1/2" of tire on top and bottom.
