Yes. A double din is a double din regardless of screen size. The overall dimensions of the unit will still be..double din

What about depth? I haven't replaced one yet but does the depth on some of the newer NAV units vary enough to worry about (for the GEN 1)?

Yes a 7 inch will well should fit. I have a 7 inch in my 01 but it is a VERY tight squeeze in the depth department.. Zip tie the wires together making a nice clean pile and it should fit. Good Luck

+1 just put one in mine, i zip tied the wires together and pulled them to the side to fit

if your worried about depth, i would check out the dimensions of a pioneer AVIC, as any thing much deeper will have issues, most are all around the same depth but ive seen a couple (very cheap knock off brands) that where almost 1.5 inches deeper than a normal unit and that may be a problem as getting a AVIC takes a little wiggling and careful stuffing.
