My back driver side window got off track...took it to dealership and they hitting me for 217 because of a Regulator needs to be replaced. At least I think that's what he said....cost too much you think?

Don't know on the LS for sure but I know chebbies and I think I read some of the LS have problems with the plastic rollers grinding themselves up and going off track. The regulator is something the dealers love to replace because it usually fixes window problems and they make big bucks doing it.

But the rollers are often all that is wrong, especially if the window is off track.

If you are decent with tools(ie you know how to remove the door panel) you can at least check for yourself to see if the rollers are chewed up. You remove the door panel and look at the rollers in their tracks. If the rollers are broken or chewed up or out of the track you have found the problem.

The parts at least for my old chebby are about $1 each, usually takes two rollers. Most people grind a slot in the track to slide the new roller in and pop it into place. Some just use pliers to bend the channel open. Do this away from where the roller will travel otherwise it will pop out of the track at the cut or bend.

The one gotcha is that the metal edges in the door are often very sharp and will cut you to ribbons if you are careless.

The job takes maybe half an hour to an hour depending on how many times you have to stop to mop up the blood.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

common issue - the was a TSB that replaced them under warranty.

you can DIY - $30 in part about about an hour of time.

Windows Inop:
- Certain LSs my experience any of the windows inop due to broken regulators, most common is the rear windows.

Cause - Faulty window regulators (if a crunching noise is heard hear when operatring affected window this will be your problem)

Repair - Replace affected Regulator in some instances covered under warranty this TSB will apply, (see build date on your driver door)
If this tsb applys to your vehicle both rear regulators will be inpsepcted and both will be replaced if neccessary.

It should if it is a warranty with Lincoln Directly i think

remember - TSB is not a 'recall' - so it is only covered under warranty if your car is still under warranty and you have the failure described.

otherwise - do it yourself.

yea i had the two front ones go out on me. luckily i have an aftermarket waranty but they charged about 300 each time. thats at the dealership though, they charge 85 bucks just to look at it and like 120 for the part and the rest labour.

This is not only a LS issue but just about every Ford product since the early 80's. My 85 Tbird had the same issue - got lucky they take the same gear as my 65 Tbird - which was all metal - never had the issue again til my 90 TC blew the fronts - different gear but same 3 little nylon/plastic little bastards as the rest of Ford regulators. $9.00 kit from eBay and back up and down, up and down. Took only an hour and a busted knuckle. Saved $200 over what Lincoln wanted. Go ahead and try it yourself...it is already broken!
